Administrative Intern 3
Part-Time/Non-Permanent
The Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is recruiting to fill one part-time, non-permanent, Administrative Intern 3 position located in the Technology and Financial Management Program. The duty station for this position is the Natural Resources Building, Olympia, Thurston County.
The Administrative Intern 3 provides project support primarily to the Assistant Director of the Technology and Financial Management Program and the Innovation & Strategies Manager.  These support functions will be highly variable, depending upon current projects, workloads and needs.  They will include clerical and administrative support when needed, but primarily special research and coordination projects.  This position is ideal for college students who are looking for a part time job and a future career with WDFW or other state service.

This part-time (40%) internship will last no longer than 12 months.

Duties
  • Project Support for Program Assistant Director (AD) and Innovation & Strategies Manager (ISM), Program Administration, Budget, Purchasing and Contracts Units. These projects will vary quite a bit, and may include projects involving: report review and preparation for agency initiatives, the program training and web pages, program.
  • Training programs, program performance measures, assisting in facilitating or documenting processes, or assisting other lean projects.
  • Projects may be performed independently, or in direct support of the Assistant Director, Innovations & Strategy Manager, or other senior staff in TFM administration.
  • Help with workload spikes or backlogs.
  • Back up the administrative assistant with their support work, including scheduling, meeting preparation, archives, records management, processing invoices, and other office support functions.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program.
  • Professional office experience.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook to manage and track documents, reports, spreadsheets, databases, etc.

Working Conditions

  • Work is generally performed in an office setting; position requires extensive computer use and sitting. The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
  • This position normally works 16 regularly scheduled hours within an 8-5, Monday-Friday framework.
  • Some travel may be required throughout the State to attend training, meetings, and conferences.
  • Computer hardware & software; general office equipment.
  • Providing excellent customer service to WDFW’s many programs is integral to TFMs’ success.

Union
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE), which contains a “union security” provision.  This means that, as a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Paid sick leave may be used for reasons included in WAC 357-31-130.
