The Seattle Department of Transportation is seeking an undergraduate, preferably a junior or senior, or graduate student to support capital project outreach.  Candidate’s work will include development of written and visual materials like factsheets, flyers, and presentations; supporting meetings and outreach events; serving as a City of Seattle customer service representative; and communicating complex information to the general public.

  • Learn about Seattle Department of Transportation project delivery, including new sidewalk development, bike lanes, neighborhood greenways, paving, bridge repair, corridor and Vision Zero projects.
  • Implement and evaluate inclusive public engagement strategies.
  • Acquire and practice skills in writing, creating graphics and visualizations, developing presentations and memos, and customer service.
  • Engage with members of the public at meetings and events to share information on Seattle Department of Transportation’s work.
  • Participate in a collaborative team environment with responsive review and critique that encourages the candidate to develop and improve skills in community engagement and communications.
 Job Responsibilities:
  • Project outreach – develop written and visual material and project collateral; CRM data entry; field visits; meeting support.  Projects include Safe Routes to School, Vision Zero, Neighborhood Greenways Review Sidewalk Development and Corridors.
  • Public events – planning and staffing public events including open houses, briefings, fairs, and festivals.  Serve as a City of Seattle representative to the public.
  • Community engagement and communications strategy.
  • Special projects as assigned, e.g. copyediting written material, before/after site photos, blog posts, social media, drafting summaries and reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Open all students, undergraduate and graduate students, who are enrolled in an accredited educational program preferably studying Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Communications, Marketing/Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.

Undergraduate students will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

Graduate students will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

Experience: 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organization skills, detail-oriented, and ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a simple manner.
  • Understand principles of urban/transportation planning, public engagement, and customer service.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Photography.
  • Multilingual.
 Additional Information:
Start/End Dates:  Intern will start in late June/early July, 2018 and end in early October, 2018 with the potential to reduce to 20 hours/week while class is in session and extend through fall/winter/spring quarter.

Schedule:  Intern will work 40 hours/week during summer; 20 hours/week when school is in session.  Work hours can be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and may work some weekends and/or evenings.

Salary:  Undergraduates will be paid $16.56/hour. Graduates will be paid $20.30/hour.
