Purpose
The Port of Seattle is committed to assisting military personnel departing active duty service transition to civilian employment. The Veteran’s Fellowship Program is designed to provide short term (6 months) employment that will assist veteran’s selected for the program in the following areas:
Identifying transferable skills
Exposure to a civilian work environment
Career assistance
Exposure to corporate business practices
Mentoring
Resume and interview assistance
Essential Functions
Assist in the management of Maritime, Economic Development, and NW Seaport Alliance projects in various phases (initiation, planning, design, execution, and closeout). Focus will be assisting on a Harbor Moorage study that may lead to one or more capital construction projects.
Assist with monitoring and coordinating activities of contractors and consultants during projects
Assist with working with tenants/consultants to better understand Port processes
Assist in developing and negotiating specifications and schedules for design and construction of projects.
Serve as coordinator amongst the multi-disciplinary project delivery team during the transition from design through procurement of a construction contract into the construction phase.
Manage, track, and report project controls including project scope, schedule, budget, and authorization.
Monitor and evaluate projects through regular interaction with project delivery team (consultants, contractors, in-house project staff, stakeholders, etc.) to ensure adherence to project specifications and standards.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of project management processes and procedures.
Knowledge of basic process improvement concepts.
Proficient computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint)
Good communication skills both written and verbal.
Good research and analysis skills.
Can analyze and communicate complex technical and financial information to others not necessarily with a technical background.
Ability to build positive and effective relationships with port staff, consultants, contractors, and tenants.
Ability to set priorities and accomplish predetermined goals within set budgets and schedules.
Ability to work as member of a team as well as independently.
Judgment in knowing when to ask questions and raise issues .
Qualifications
Veterans Fellowships require a minimum of three (3) years of active duty or mobilized reserve duty service in a branch of the U.S. Military Service (which includes the United States Coast Guard). Documentation of an honorable discharge from active or reserve status must be presented as part of the application process. Veterans Fellowship applicants must be within six (6) months of discharge to apply for a fellowship unless they have not worked full-time since their discharge and have been a full-time student in a degree or certification program since their discharge.
Preferred Qualifications
5 years of public works, engineering, project management, business development, and/or process improvement experience
Knowledge of marine structures
Business development, customer support, marketing, finance, and resource management skills are also highly desirable.
The Port of Seattle’s Veterans Fellowship Program is a six (6) month program and participation in the complete program is necessary to realize the full range of benefits the program is designed to offer. While Veterans Fellows are working at the Port as a Veterans Fellow the following will be provided: Medical and Dental insurance, holiday pay on Port observed holidays, worker’s compensation coverage, civil duty leave, military leave and FICA.
Work Environment
The work is primarily performed in an office environment.
The hiring range is between the minimum and midpoint of the compensation range and is based on the knowledge, skill, and experience of the successful candidate.
