Wilderness Trails Forestry Technician – Payette National Forest (Chamberlain Wilderness Station, ID)

Position Summary:The Payette National Forest is recruiting Two Forestry Technician (Trails) summer interns from May 29th through September 26, 2018.  The incumbent will be paired with a permanent Forest Service Employee as part of a trail crew clearing downfall and brush from multiple-use trails. This position will typically work 10 eight hour days on with 4 days off.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Interns will work as part of a trail crew clearing downfall and brush from multiple-use trails. Other duties will include tread reconstruction, bridge construction, and installing water diversion and tread stabilization structures. Maintenance of tools and trail related equipment. The position requires working and camping in remote areas in varying weather.

Required Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work as part of a small team
  • The crew is generally self-supporting, carrying all personal supplies and equipment in loads up to 65 pounds or more, up to 15 miles per day in remote settings
  • A high level of fitness is required
  • Positive attitude
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground

Desired Qualifications:

  • Camping and Backpacking Experience

Duty/Housing Location:

The internship will be spent in the Frank Church – River of No Return Wilderness based out of a remote, primitive duty station with no electricity, phone service or internet.  There will be no access to town or facilities. Groceries and mail will be delivered once a week by backcountry charter service. Interns will be responsible for ordering and purchasing groceries through this charter service.

Terms of Employment:

One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May 29th through September 26, 2018. The member must complete a minimum of 675 service hours by the end of their term.

Program Benefits:

$4.687.50 living allowance, prorated on a pay period (monthly) basis, a $ 2,255.24 education award upon completion of the 675 hours of service. The incumbent will receive training in CPR/First Aid & defensive driving. Housing is provided.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
