The Forest Health Section of the Wildfire Division is seeking a Community Wildfire Preparedness Coordinator for the Wildfire Prevention and Fuels Reduction Program in Olympia, WA.
This position works under the guidance of the Wildfire Prevention and Fuels Reduction Program Manager to provide statewide support to DNR region staff, conservation districts, fire districts, existing and prospective Firewise USA sites and Fire Adapted Communities, and other at-risk populations. The duties of this position are essential to ensure appropriate and coordinated wildland fire risk reduction prevention, education, and outreach activities occur throughout Washington.
Duties of this position include:- Coordination of non-regulatory wildfire prevention and preparedness including development of communication plans and media releases, identifying appropriate outreach opportunities and techniques, soliciting partners and stakeholders to identify partnership opportunities, and coordinating a statewide WUI technical assistance program
- Assistance with development, implementation, and administration of wildland fire risk reduction prevention and education programs including NFPA’s Firewise USA program, Fire Adapted Communities, Wildfire Awareness Month, and associated grant programs
- Delivery of formal and informal outreach on wildland fire prevention, preparedness, and mitigation including training, presentations, and seminars on Firewise USA, Fire Adapted Communities, hazard reduction activities, and other wildland fire prevention programs
- Qualifications
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in education, administration, marketing, graphic design, natural resources, or other applicable field.
- Two years of employment as a fire fighter, fire prevention educator, or fire mitigation professional.
- Three years’ experience in fuel reduction, forest restoration, forest health projects, or project management. Experience must demonstrate project management expertise.
- Two years’ experience building partnerships and project coordination with varied stakeholders and coordination with representatives of other agencies. Experience with state and local government programs preferred.
- One-year experience administering contracts, interagency agreements, grants or other partnership agreements.
- Familiarity with and ability to present/deliver wildfire prevention, public safety education, wildland fire risk reduction strategies.
- Knowledge and ability to articulate clearly the guidelines found within NFPA 1141/1144 and communicate concepts for application on homes and property.
- Ability to convey messages correctly, clearly, and persuasively using excellent written, verbal, and public speaking skills.
- Intermediate to advanced skills with Microsoft Office and SharePoint.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience using graphic design and marketing skills to expand educational program participation.
- Experience developing, hosting and delivering wildfire prevention, public safety education, wildland fire risk reduction strategies, and Firewise USA/Fire Adapted Community to diverse audiences.
- Two years’ experience performing wildfire risk assessments and home assessments.
- Experience writing, evaluating, and obtaining funds through successful grant applications for wildfire preparedness, prevention, and mitigation activities.
- Familiarity with DNR assistance programs and the services and methods of technical and financial assistance delivery.
- Knowledge of ArcGIS to document, compile, and map observations and potential projects.
- NFPA Assessing Structure Ignition Potential from Wildfire/Home Ignition Zone training.
- Certified as NFPA Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist (CWMS)
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements
