The Sagebrush Ecology Technician will primarily collect data in support of field research, monitoring, and assessment projects (30%) and support preparation and implementation of projects via field and lab work (50%). Other duties will include data entry (10%) and other conservation/science tasks as directed (10%). Specific projects include, but are not limited to: collecting data on efficacy of novel sagebrush-steppe restoration technologies, collecting field data to assess accuracy of remotely-sensed ecological status, and pilot testing of sage-grouse habitat quality tools. The Sagebrush Ecology Technician will also support The Nature Conservancy’s Precision Restoration project by producing enhanced seed materials, designed to increase successful restoration of native perennial vegetation in annual grass-prone rangelands.

This is a full-time, short-term seasonal position with a target start date of July 9 and ending mid-December.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Sagebrush Ecology Technician provides administrative, research, project management and/or general assistance to program or preserve staff.

RESPONSIBILIITES & SCOPE

• Will perform field work.
• Maintain project records.
• May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
• May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
• May require overnight travel in and out of state.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Associates Degree in natural resources; environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months’ experience.
• Experience in an outdoor or lab or greenhouse setting.
• Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
• Field experience in sagebrush ecosystems and knowledge of common plant species.
• Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to identify plant species using diagnostic tools such as a dichotomous key.
• Ability to work effectively on a small team.
• Demonstrated ability to safely travel on primitive roads and trails.
• Time management skills.
• Ability to follow safety protocols for using small machinery, hand tools, and power tools in field and lab/shop environment.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

• Preferred hiring range: $18.37-$19.52.
• This is a short-term, 40 hours per week, seasonal position with a target start date of July 9 ending in mid-December.

This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with the Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program.
