There is currently two (2) 4-months non-permanent Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 employment opportunity at the Morse Creek. The duty station for this position is located at 1261 Fish Hatchery, Sequim, WA. Anticipated start date is July 2, 2018 through November 30, 2018.
- Duties
- Fish Culture
Tasks include:
Feeds fish their calculated daily ration
Monitors fish behavior and health
Monitors egg and fish production;
Administers therapeutants, calculates and administer drugs as prescribed.
Knowledge of SDS (safety data sheets) on all hatchery chemicals used.
Identifies, sorts, and samples species for spawning and adult distribution
Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health
Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling as directed and records data.
Collects fish tissue and fluid samples and records data
Performs fish inventories, splits, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants fish.Recordkeeping and Reporting
Tasks include:
Enters data into forms and spreadsheets
Demonstrates proficiency with computerized forms and accuracy in recordkeeping (e.g. fishbooks, fish mortality, feed sheets, VMTS, bills (OPF’s), budget expenditure reports, feed inventory, and chemical usage).
Fills out standard report forms. Accurately fills out agency forms such as fish transfer tickets, hatchery invoice tickets, etc.
Submits complete and accurate forms required.Operation and Maintenance of Facility
Tasks include:
Monitors water flow and quality parameters; takes water samples and readings (e.g. dissolved gases and other parameters as required.
Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments.
Responds to alarms, determining and taking appropriate action
Monitors and maintains facility support systems
Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.Operation and Maintenance of Equipment
Task include:
Drives planting truck to and from planting sites.
Informs supervisor of and repair needs.
Organizes and maintains hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds.
Communicates safety concerns in a timely and accurate manner (management to staff and staff to management).
Uses tools and equipment properly and safely.
Store tools and equipment properly
Communicates clearly to Hatchery Specialist 3 or Hatchery Specialist 4 if the FHS3 is not available for concerns pertaining to operations.Public Contact and Communications;
Tasks include:
Responds to/answers questions from visitors to the facility professional manner.
Conducts organized tours
Inter acts with the public in a polite, professional manner.
Identifies the best way to respond with difficult-to-answer questions or when information is not readily obtainable.
Follows up to ensure that an answer was obtained.Working Conditions
Typical work schedule is 40 hours per week 8 hour per day, 10 days on 4 days off depending on the time of year; includes days, nights, weekends and holidays as needed. May occasionally require travel and work is excess of 40 hours per week to meet seasonal workload demands throughout the complex as needed.Ability to lift 50 lbs frequent, work out doors in all weather conditions extreme heat, freezing cold, rain, wind, snow, walking on river, threw trees/brush, gillnetting, seining, gaffing. This position requires a valid driver’s license for travel is required within the complex and as needed.. Standby has been assigned and there is no agency housing available to facilitate the standby requirement.

Management may determine it is necessary to assign it in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.
Union
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE), which contains a “union security” provision. This means that, as a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a Representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status. - Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED. Preferred work experience in a hatchery setting.
Knowledge and Abilities Desired:
Basic computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Excel software.
Ability to drive manual transmission vehicle.
Ability to lift 50 lbs, work out of doors in all weather conditions and perform strenuous physical activities.
Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.
This position requires a valid driver’s license.
Required to perform standby duties in a remote location
