The MMP pairs college-age interns with master shipwrights in a one-on-one master/apprentice setting. The shipwright and intern meet weekly to work on a boat restoration project. Each internship lasts one college quarter. Interns will be introduced to boatbuilding, boat restoration, and boat repair techniques. Interns will fully participate in the practical hands-on work of the boatbuilding project. Lastly, they will have the rare opportunity to work with a boatwright that has a passion regarding his craft, a component of work often overlooked in today’s competitive educational environment.
The goals of the MMP are to introduce young people to boat restoration and preservation concepts, to pass knowledge of technical skills in these areas from a master shipwright to interns, to provide a glimpse into career possibilities in these fields, and to secure the future of our built heritage by cultivating the next generation of restoration and preservation advocates.
MMP Project #3 is the complete restoration of a 1941 Chris-Craft 16’ 101 Deluxe. This unique vessel is highly desirable because of its pre-war vintage (a time period considered by some to be the height of Chris-Craft design) and its cockpit layout. Donated to the BoatShop, the boat is in poor condition and needs a complete overhaul from the keel up to restore her to her former glory. This project spans six quarters and covers nearly every facet of classic vessel restoration. Over the course of the project, interns will learn specific skills including structural work (nearly every piece of the wooden structure will be replaced, including framing, decking, and planking), rebuilding the engine, restoring or replacing all mechanical components, chrome work, replacing upholstery, replacing the windshield, and finishing.
The intern will work with mentor Bruce Bronson, who has been restoring vintage Chris-Crafts for three decades. He or she will benefit from Bruce’s years of accumulated knowledge, his dedication to quality, and his superb teaching style.
