  SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 POOL – FISH PROGRAM

The Department of Fish and Wildlife, Fish Program is recruiting to fill a variety of non-permanent Scientific Technician 2 positions throughout the state. This posting will be used to establish a pool of candidates for consideration in the hiring of non-permanent positions as they become available statewide. Candidates included into this pool will remain active and available for consideration for up to 180 days from the date of application.

The positions filled using this pool will be from one to eleven months in duration. Some positions may be shortened or extended due to workload needs. Positions include full-time, part-time, and on-call schedules.

Duties
The positions filled through this pool will vary in the duties that are required. Typical work could include:
  • Conducting juvenile salmonid trapping
  • Adult weir operations
  • Adult fall Chinook, coho and chum salmon and steelhead spawner surveys
  • Angler interviews including collection of catch per unit of effort data
  • Examining catch including identifying, counting, DNA sampling, measuring, taking scales, removing body parts, extracting otoliths and detecting Coded-wire and PIT tags
  • Taking bio-samples from marine fish during annual surveys
  • Recording and maintaining accurate field data records and samples
  • Walking, hiking, rafting, or driving on sections of rivers, streams  or beaches each day regardless of the weather conditions
  • Collecting information from redds including location, date, fish presence and GPS coordinates
  • Accurately entering data into spreadsheets, databases and other computer software programs

Working Conditions:
Some positions filled from this pool may:

  • Entail working nights and/or weekends, holidays and overtime. Additionally, these positions are located in a variety of locations around the state, encompassing a variety of environmental factors. Work may be in inclement weather conditions including snow, rain, wind, and direct sun. Some positions may require travel, possibly for multiple days.
  • Require carrying heavy loads for long distances. Handling large fish (30-50 lbs).
  • Require driving long distances in state-owned vehicles or personally-owned vehicles with mileage reimbursement.
  • Require hiking up to 10 miles to survey locations.
  • Require swimming and navigating various bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, ocean, etc.
  • Require the ability to identify the color red (visual implant elastomers).
  • Require the ability to see coded wire tags, which are 2mm long.
  • Necessitate working alone in isolated areas.
  • Some positions require being on various types of vessels for long periods of time in inclement weather.
  • Be covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP), which contains a “union security” provision. This means that, as a condition of employment, you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representation or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Valid Washington State, or other state, driver’s license may be required.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
