Farm Technician Intern Description

 

The farm technician intern is an opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in natural resource management and outreach with farmers in Thurston County. The intern will work alongside the Farm Resource Planner to attend site visits, assist in the development and writing of a Conservation Plan, perform soil health testing in the field, and provide outreach support to landowners in the Shellfish Protection District. The intern will support our goals to provide technical assistance, improve natural resources, and implement best management practices that protect soil health and water quality. In addition, the intern will work alongside the Education & Outreach Coordinator to support our South Sound FarmLink program with outreach to participants, data management, as well as attending events and workshops. There is an opportunity to explore and participate in all Thurston Conservation District programing, depending on the interest and goals of the intern.

 

This is an opportunity to explore a career in natural resources and land management practices through direct landowner assistance and educational programing. The position requires a time commitment of 2 quarters OR a total of six months. This is a great opportunity for students who need to fulfill an internship requirement or an Individual Learning Contract (TESC specific). Start date may be first day of Fall Quarter OR rolling start date as soon as September 1, 2018. Successful completion of a 2 quarter/6 month internship is eligible for a $1,000 stipend at end of contract. This position is 30 hours per week. The schedule of days and times in the office is flexible and will be negotiated at time of hire.

Qualifications:

  • Good communication skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to commit to 6 months
  • 1 season of experience working on a farm operation, or 2 quarters of experience learning about natural resources, ecology, agricultural sciences, or farming
  • A good driving record and a WA State License is required for using district vehicles
