The Opportunity:

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking an experienced GIS specialist who is confident and comfortable stepping into a role training existing staff on GIS technology. This position is the agency’s primary GIS Training Coordinator and trainer and serves as a recognized senior level specialist in all areas of GIS technology. As the GIS Training Coordinator, the incumbent coordinates GIS training opportunities, conducts GIS training and provides technical support for employees throughout the department.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Evaluate and recommend GIS training resources.
  • Conduct individual, classroom, and/or web-based GIS training.
  • Develop new training materials as needed.
  • Provide one-on-one software assistance as needed and work with other business areas to integrate GIS into the workflow.
  • Perform GIS application support, troubleshooting, and software testing and evaluation.
  • Fulfill custom map and data requests.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree OR 4-5 years equivalent experience in Computer Science, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Natural Science or related field.
  • Nine (9) semester hours of GIS coursework.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience as a trainer/instructor.
  • At least three (3) years experience using Esri ArcGIS software products.
  • Technical writing and presentation skills.

Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee’s initial 30 days in this classification.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Paid sick leave may be used for reasons included in WAC 357-31-130.
