NATURAL RESOURCE WORKER 2
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one full time, career seasonal, Natural Resource Worker 2 position located in the Wildlife Program, Region 1. The duty station for this position is located at 1049 Port Way, Clarkston WA 99403 Asotin County.  The employment period is March through November, annually.

This position works under the supervision of the Blue Mountains Wildlife Area Complex Fish & Wildlife Biologist on the Asotin Creek & Chief Joseph Wildlife Areas.  The position will assist with weed control and other habitat management activities across the wildlife area.

Duties
  • Assists with weed control activities on the Asotin Creek & Chief Joseph Wildlife Areas. Use of chemical, biological, cultural, and mechanical methods for performing weed control.  Includes operation of ATV’s, 4 wheel drive trucks, tractors, boom sprayers, gas powered pumps, and back pack sprayers.  Mix herbicides and follow application directions according to the product label.
  • Assists with implementing habitat restoration, improvements and maintenance.  Planting food-plots for big game and upland wildlife, converting old agricultural fields from introduced grasses to native bunchgrass cover.  Includes operation of wheeled and tracked type tractors pulling implements such as plows, dicks, seed drills, and mowers.  Must be able to perform routine maintenance activities on agricultural equipment such as lube and filter checks and changes.  Must be able to operate 4-wheel drive trucks, ATV’s, large trucks and tractors, tracked excavator, air compressors, pumps, chain saws, gas powered trimmers, and power hand tools.
  • Maintain equipment and facilities. Operates, cleans, greases, oils, services, and makes repairs to tools and equipment. Performs sub-journey work in the construction and repair of buildings and other structures on the wildlife area.
  • Check and maintain barbwire stock fences and elk fence. This includes installing posts and braces, stretching wire, making repairs to existing fences and constructing new fence as needed, and removing old interior fences as time allows.
  • Performs and maintains buildings, vehicles, and equipment.  Maintain wildfire areas buildings such as roof and siding repairs, plumbing, vehicle and equipment preventative maintenance.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, AND three months of natural resource related labor experience.
OR
One year as a Natural Resource Worker 1.
Valid Washington State, or other state, driver’s license.
*Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s license after hire.

Preferred experience

  • A strong knowledge and experience working in the manipulation and management of upland plant communities is highly desirable.
  • Background in the use of agricultural practices and equipment is highly desirable.
  • Possess a current pesticide applicators license, or the ability to acquire a license within 30 days.
  • Experience in Washington native plant identification.

The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

  • Work in the field in all weather conditions, walk streams and over rugged terrain up to 50% of the time. Ability to work in inclement weather over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, while at times carrying up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to load and transport machinery, equipment, and gear.
  • Willingness and ability to perform in a punctual and dependable manner.
  • Willingness to accept supervision.
  • Occasional work hours outside of the regular 6:30 am – 5:00 pm Mon-Thursday schedule might include occasional early morning or evening hours, and weekend duties.

Supplemental Information
Working Conditions

  • This position primarily works in the field but at times may work in an office setting that includes reading, writing, phone, and computer use and may include travel for field duties.  Typical hours are 6:30am to 5pm Monday-Thursday, although duties occasionally require work in excess of 40 hours. These hours are flexible to accommodate seasonal workload or additional duties as assigned by the Blue Mountains Wildlife Area Manager for work performed outdoors.
  • Must have the ability to operate a vehicle and hold a valid driver’s license.  Must be able to load and transport equipment and gear, and operate a variety of equipment, including ATVs, boats and tractors with implements.
  • Physical, environmental, or mental demands of key work: Must be able to drive a vehicle, with trailer to units to conduct field habitat or weed control projects routinely.  Ability to walk in muddy and wet environment for extended hours (6 to 8 hours).
  • Health, Safety or Administrative Requirements: Capable of walking over rough terrain for short distances (?1 mile) regularly or occasionally over long distances (several miles). Must be able to walk over difficult terrain, lift and carry at least 40 pounds’ short distances.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours as necessary to complete assignments.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
