The Center for Natural Lands Management’s (CNLM) stewardship activities are currently divided between California and Washington. In the State of Washington, CNLM focuses on conservation of one of the rarest ecosystems in United States, the prairie and oak woodlands of the south Puget Sound region. At least 92 percent of the prairie habitat in south Puget Sound region has been converted to other land uses or destroyed. CNLM aims to protect and restore prairie and oak habitats, and support the recovery of rare species. Our Washington staff serves our conservation objectives by acquiring, managing and restoring conservation lands, conducting applied restoration research projects, growing native plants and seed, and conducting outreach to partners and the public. CNLM seeks eight full-time AmeriCorps members to fill prairie restoration service opportunities with the South Sound Prairies Program in the Olympia office.
The Butterfly/Pollinator Science Technician assists ongoing experiments assessing how restoration benefits pollination and recovery of rare butterfly populations in western WA. The technician will spend 60% of their time assisting staff with experimental research and species monitoring; the remaining time will be spent on data management, ID of collected insect specimens, and/or behavioral observations of field video footage. Two research studies in which this member will participate are factors impacting survival of endangered buttefly larvae and effects of restoration on the structure of plant-pollinator communities. Projects will include literature reviews, experiment set-up, data collection, quality control. This member will serve with CNLM staff at multiple prairie sites. This position entails a high level of responsibility and relies on the member’s scientific background, organization, collaborative work ethic, and positive attitude during long field days.
