The Sustainability Specialist AmeriCorps member will serve directly with the Sustainability Officer by supporting a diversity of programs that foster achievement of the City’s sustainability goals and objectives. They will increase environmental awareness through outreach events and community based social media and marketing, integrate sustainability and environmental values into the City’s plans and programs, and promote sustainable practices by citizens, businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. They will also serve to increase awareness of existing services and programs that help community members live more sustainably. The AmeriCorps member will serve at the Center for Urban Waters office building located at 326 East D Street, Tacoma, WA. Please note that this position is contingent on funding. This person will:
Lead planning committee for annual springtime South Sound Sustainability Expo
Improve presentations on environmental topics, such as climate change, electric vehicles, and urban forestry, and deliver to community groups
Engage with and inform public on sustainability events and initiatives through social media, namely the Tacoma Sustainability Facebook page, Sustainable Tacoma Commission, EnviroNews Listserv, and City website
Lead planning for Green Event Program to help event planners and attendees have a more sustainable impact; conduct outreach to and hold meetings with community organizations
Participate in development and implementation of various environmental programs to prevent waste, increase tree canopy, encourage sustainable transportation, and more
Use existing and develop new tracking and reporting tools and methods, including quarterly success stories and annual accomplishments
Mobilize and manage volunteers for events

Bachelor’s degree and one year professional experience
Knowledge of and passion for environmental issues
Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities and deadlines, prioritize and see projects through to completion
Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Availability for occasional evenings and weekends
PREFERRED
Knowledge of Tacoma area and community
Experience in event planning
Marketing and design skills
