The Business Development unit within the Department of Commerce’s Office of Economic Development and Competitiveness is recruiting for a part-time, permanent Research Analyst 1.  This is an entry-level professional economic development position requiring strong research, writing, documentation preparation, database management, and event and program coordination skills/experience.  This position provides professional support for Business Development’s business recruitment, retention, expansion, and proactive outreach activities which in turn support Commerce’s mission to drive job creation and private investment in Washington State.

The Office of Economic Development and Competitiveness (OEDC) is a team of professionals that collaborate on policies and growth strategies in target sectors. Along with colleagues in Business Development, Marketing, Industry Sector Development and International Trade the Commerce team is focused on an agenda to drive economic growth for all of Washington State.

Duties
This position is located in Seattle and reports to the Business Development Managing Director. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Researching and preparing economic, financial, and demographic information using market research from industry and trade journals, industry and business publications, news sources, Department of Revenue, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment, industry, and wage databases, market trend reports and other sources in support of business development projects, proposals, information requests, and activities.
  • Gathering technical information for recruiters on demand from business journals and publications, company websites and online profiles, social media, press releases and company contacts.
  • Utilizing Salesforce CRM, Excel, and database management tools to update and maintain the state’s economic/demographic profiles, databases, and other information as directed.
  • Updating and maintaining Salesforce data and related resources for use in the development of recurring monthly reports and other information as directed.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with college-level course work in statistics or one year of work experience in statistics, analysis, or research.
    OR
    Equivalent education/experience.
  • Proficient in Windows-based computer systems, standard office software, Excel and desktop publishing.
  • Proficient in using SalesForce CRM to manage information and develop reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in using a database and database tools to manage and locate information

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
