Who we are:
The Seattle Aquarium is one of Washington state’s leading environmental education and stewardship institutions and the region’s green gathering place for discussion and dissemination of information about the oceans and marine conservation. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), it’s the eighth-largest aquarium in the U.S. by attendance and among the top five paid visitor attractions in the Puget Sound region.

The Aquarium hosts over 800,000 visitors each year—and that’s just the beginning of its community impact. The Aquarium works to advance awareness of and action for ocean health by increasing access for students, underserved populations and cultural groups through specialized programs and events such as Beach Naturalists, Citizen Science, Open House and more.

To increase that impact even further, the Aquarium has developed a master plan to substantially increase in size by opening a new exhibit building, the Ocean Pavilion, and through growth from the opening of a new 20-acre park along the waterfront.

The plan integrates a wide variety of elements: record-setting attendance, membership and fundraising growth, an energized board of directors, and increasingly professional management. As Seattle continues to redefine its relationship with the waterfront by replacing the viaduct with an underground tunnel, the Seattle Aquarium will become the focal point of this vibrant and revitalized area.

Here’s what you get to do:
The Seattle Aquarium is expanding its conservation efforts. As part of this growth, the Seattle Aquarium launched a new department, conservation programs and partnerships, in January, 2018. This department encompasses three main focal areas: science, policy and sustainability. We have had a robust conservation research program, as well as active policy and sustainability programs for decades. However, this work was previously focused primarily on the Salish Sea. The ocean policy manager will fill a vital leadership role for advancing the Seattle Aquarium’s policy work, helping to realize our vision to emerge as a pro-active leader in conservation, both in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The ocean policy manager will lead this work under the strategic direction of the director of conservation programs and partnerships.

The Seattle Aquarium has a unique role to play in the conservation landscape, with its long-running conservation research program, interactions with more than 850,000 guests each year (including more than 40,000 schoolchildren) and a team of life science and visitor engagement professionals. This highly skilled, knowledgeable and diverse group allows the Seattle Aquarium to assume a major role in the conservation of the marine environment.

The main areas of responsibility this role supports are:

• Identify and advance multi-faceted, cross-departmental policy campaigns that could include writing and distributing comment letters, coordinating public outreach via exhibit interpretation, and developing communication materials.
• Build and foster partnerships with government representatives in the Pacific Northwest (i.e., local, state, federal, Native Nations), and Coral Triangle (i.e., local, regency, provincial, national, indigenous communities).
• Research, analyze and report on environmental issues at all levels of government here in the United States and countries within the Coral Triangle.
• Advocate for the Seattle Aquarium’s position on a local, state and federal level, including providing public comment during agency meetings.
• Work with the public relations and marketing departments to develop clear, compelling communication materials, including web content, fact sheets, white papers, PSAs and more.
• Maintain existing and foster new partnerships with ocean policy leaders in the aquarium, nonprofit and academic sectors, and represent the Aquarium on multiple external committees/working groups (e.g., Aquarium Conservation Partnership Policy Committee, Seafood Watch Conservation Partnership, Orca-Salmon Alliance, Ocean Acidification Alliance).

Additional responsibilities:

• Provide support for presentations and talking points on ocean policy issues and actions, including for the president/CEO and members of the conservation committee.
• Summarize and report on scientific studies and literature regarding climate change, marine debris and pollution, overexploitation, and other conservation issues related to the Seattle Aquarium’s conservation priorities.
• Lead a biennial science needs assessment with Pacific Northwest state and federal agencies to ensure Aquarium research projects align with agency science needs, where possible.
• Plan and lead annual convenings with government agencies to share information, and renew existing and identify new opportunities for collaboration.
• Recruit and supervise policy intern(s) and volunteers.

We’re looking for:

• B.A./B.S. degree required, preferably in marine or environmental policy, law or other related degree; marine science also considered if professional experience in policy or law.
• Master’s degree, preferred.
• At least one degree should be in marine or environmental policy, law or related field.
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in environmental policy; will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated passion for the Aquarium’s mission and values.
• Demonstrated success working in the ocean policy field, navigating complex political landscapes to advance science-based ocean policy that aims to improve ocean health.
• Strong written and oral communications skills, and an understanding of the breadth of communications channels and tools available.
• Strong organizational, planning and budgeting skills.
• Existing network of relationships with government representatives in Washington and/or Coral Triangle nations preferred.
• Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and have a service-oriented work ethic.
• Experience leading a team of interns and/or volunteers a plus.
