As a Shoreline Survey Assistant, you’ll work in the Shellfish Program’s Growing Area Section, which determines if shellfish growing areas meet national sanitary requirements.  You’ll help to actively evaluate potential shoreline pollution sources to determine if it is safe to commercially and recreationally harvest shellfish.

This position assists with opening or closing shellfish harvest areas based on rainfall, flooding, and spill events, and works with commercial shellfish companies to assure they are notified about closures.

What will you be doing? – Duties include:

• Assisting the shoreline survey leads in completing surveys along Washington’s beaches by collecting and reviewing water quality data, inspecting individual on-site sewage systems, and evaluating other shoreline pollution sources, focusing on nonpoint pollution and its impact on safe shellfish harvest.

• Planning, organizing, and completing the reevaluation of potential shoreline pollution sources.

• Reviewing information provided by commercial shellfish companies about an area or parcel for potential shellfish harvest. Assuring these areas have been evaluated for potential nonpoint pollution sources and preparing a plan to evaluate if necessary.

• Assisting with the opening or closing shellfish harvest areas based on rainfall, flooding, and spill events and determining the length of the closure. In addition you will work with commercial shellfish companies to assure they are notified about closures.

What we’re looking for – Required Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree or higher in public health, environmental health, natural or physical science or allied field; AND two (2) or more years of professional experience in an environmental health, public health, natural science, or physical science program.

• One (1) or more years of experience evaluating nonpoint water pollution sources.

• Knowledge of the following:

o Nonpoint pollution source evaluation methods.
o On-site sewage system evaluation methods.

Desired Qualification(s) 

• Four (4) or more years of experience in public health or environmental health.

• Three (3) or more years experience evaluating nonpoint source pollution.

• Two (2) or more of years experience working at a local health jurisdiction on on-site sewage system issues.

• Registered Sanitarian in Washington State or with the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA).

• A Master’s degree in public health, environmental health, natural or physical sciences or allied field.

This is a position covered by a bargaining unit for which the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is the exclusive representative.
