Department Description
The UCD Health Sustainability efforts are guided and shaped by a Sustainability Committee (SC) to implement the UC system-wide sustainability policies. Specific sustainability work is carried out by various Sustainability workgroups including: Green Building, Clean Energy, Climate Protection, Transportation, Building Operations, Recycling and Waste Management, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing, Food Services and Water Systems.

Qualifications
REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, sustainability or other related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Progressive sustainability and environmental program management responsibility experience.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and experience to communicate the intent of codes and regulations, policies and procedures in a manner accessible to a broad audience.
- Skills and experience to negotiate and resolve conflicts involving diverse views and positions and lead diverse groups working complex projects to consensus and resolution of sustainability issues.
- Advanced skills in data analytics, assessing sustainability programs, and payback on investment.
- Experience and/or skills to conduct complex and varied analyses of energy consumption, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness of sustainability projects. Skills to recognize trends develop long-range goals and analyze data of a complex and variable nature.
- Skills and knowledge to make sound decisions and apply professional knowledge and expertise in sustainability using original and innovative approaches and techniques to solve complex non-routine problems.
- Experience and knowledge in but not limited to: Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, e-mail, databases, etc.
PREFERRED
- Master’s degree in environmental sciences, sustainability or other relative field.
- LEED Accredited Professional.
- ISSP Certified Sustainability Professional.
- Advanced knowledge of US Green Building Council.
- Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager, Certified Healthcare Safety Professional or Certified Safety Professional.
- Sustainable operations experience in academic or healthcare setting.

ResponsibilitiesThe Director of Sustainability (Sustainability Officer 4) is responsible for developing, leading, and coordinating all UCD Health initiatives related to sustainability in accordance with the UCDHS Sustainability Committee mission and vision, and to update initiatives to keep current with institutional capacity and developing technologies. The incumbent will be responsible for tracking and benchmarking all environmental programs, coordinating environmental programs between departments, and representing the organization’s environmental initiatives with both internal and external stakeholders. The Director of Sustainability will ensure that the goals established by the Executive Steering Committee for Sustainability (ESCS) are being met and provide support to the Sustainability Committee, ensuring that its work groups are coordinated and working in concert with UCDH Sustainability policy. Additionally, this position will provide content management and coordination for UCDH’s Sustainability website.
The Director of Sustainability applies advanced knowledge of sustainability practices and policies to identify, develop, and implement institutional sustainability efforts for the University. This position researches and monitors trends and innovations in energy and sustainability and provides expertise on these topics to the University. The Director of Sustainability will manage programs that include formulating strategies, administering processes, and resources with a high degree of autonomy and may be required to supervise others or lead staff on sustainability projects.
