Mass Audubon’s Berkshire Wildlife Sanctuaries encompass nearly 3,000 acres of ecologically diverse conservation land. The Teacher Naturalist II works as part of a dynamic team of staff and interns who support education, conservation, and advocacy efforts at our sanctuaries, regional schools, community venues, and other locations. The Teacher Naturalist II spends the majority of their time to developing and teaching programs to youth, families, and adults in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational philosophy, goals, standards, and practices. Other time may be used to supervise education staff and serve as a resource on natural history, environmental policy, and conservation science issues for visitors, members, other staff, and volunteers. The Teacher Naturalist II assists in coordination, preparation, marketing, fundraising, and evaluation for educational programs and special events.
Responsibilities
Education Programs and Curriculum Development:
Develop and implement science-based, environmental education programs for youth, families, and adults on a wide range of topics.
Develop environmental education lessons/activities for use in schools, after school programs, sanctuary field trips for schools/groups, public programs (nature walks, hikes, birding walks, canoe trips, etc.), nature day camp, special events, community outreach programs, and other education venues.
Serve as a resource on natural history, environmental policy, and conservation science issues for visitors, members, and volunteers.
Maintain educational supplies, curricula, instructional materials, and resources.
Maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority.
Support part-time education staff and intern in completing sanctuary duties.
Administration/Supervision:
Assist in the planning, scheduling, and marketing of educational programs.
Conduct evaluation of programs and other related activities.
Maintain accurate records of programs and program participants.
Provide work direction for non-supervisory full-time or part-time staff or volunteers, including providing new employee orientation, assigning work, reviewing and monitoring performance, and providing ongoing training/mentoring.
Monitor program income and expenses in a budget up to $100,000 and inform supervisor of variances.
Participate in planning, writing, and preparation of program catalogs, site-based informational brochures, and education related publications, including e-communications.
Orient visitors, members, and community regarding Mass Audubon’s mission, programs, and stewardship.
Other:
Attend sanctuary staff meetings and actively participate with the Director of Education in statewide education staff meetings, education work groups, and professional development trainings, as required.
Lead and/or assist programs and special events on weekdays and weekends, during the school year and during winter, spring, and summer school vacations periods, as needed.
Support membership development and fundraising, as needed.
Perform other position-related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biological or earth science environmental studies, nature interpretation, or education or equivalent.
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in environmental education or Master’s degree in biological or earth science environmental studies, nature interpretation, or education or equivalent, and a minimum of 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion.
Supervisory experience for at least one year.
Knowledge of local natural history, environmental policies and conservation science issues desirable.
Requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire.
Requires successful completion of a CORI and SORI.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a year round, 32 hour/week, benefit-eligible, non-exempt position. Competitive salary, commensurate with experience.
