The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation is seeking a GIS specialist to join the GIS Services section within the Transportation Data, GIS and Modeling Office’s GIS and Roadway Data Branch. The GIS Services section’s functions include: GIS Helpdesk, GIS training, GIS application support, spatial data analysis, map service publication and support, cartography, and GIS project consulting. Under the direction of the GIS Mapping, Training and Support Supervisor, this position provides technical support relating to GIS, cartography, spatial data analysis, and GIS best practices to both technical and non-technical staff throughout the Department. The products and services that this position supports are used throughout the Department for project planning, public engagement, safety analysis, budget development, programming, design, construction, and maintenance.

As the Agency’s primary GIS Trainer, you will have the ability to:
- Conduct individual, classroom or web-based GIS training. This includes developing training materials, scheduling classes, promoting classes, reserving facilities, follow-up troubleshooting and answering questions. Conduct gap analysis between existing GIS training resources and needs and the future needs of the Agency.
- As part of the WSDOT GIS Support Team, serve as a technical resource to WSDOT’s GIS user community; provide general GIS software assistance; perform customer outreach by answering questions, troubleshooting technical problems, delivering technical demonstrations, communicating technical GIS news and information to the wider WSDOT GIS community, and researching information as requested.
- Fulfill custom map and data requests. Perform data analysis, design maps, graphics, illustrations, and layouts for custom map and data requests; use standard cartographic data layers and compile data provided by customers to create new custom spatial dataset and representation for use in custom map products.
- Research, evaluate, and test new Esri GIS software and commercial data products.
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
- Bachelor’s degree OR 4-5 years equivalent experience in Computer Science, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Natural Science or related field.
- Nine (9) semester hours of GIS coursework.
- Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience as a trainer/instructor.
- At least three (3) years experience using Esri ArcGIS software products.
- Technical writing and presentation skills.
