The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”).  The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it.  The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

SUMMARY: Under general direction and supervision, this position manages and develops relevant education programs for the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens and ensures that the programs meet department goals and advance the Zoo’s mission & core values. Develops program descriptions and lesson plans, including, but not limited to, the creation, procurement, and organization of materials appropriate for the assessment of participants and community needs. As part of a dynamic team, assists with program marketing, staff development and strategic planning.  Performs other duties as assigned or required.  Incumbent may be required to work on weekends, holidays & on an as-needed basis, based on business needs.

 

 ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES, include the following:

 

Upholds the Society’s mission, core values and other policies/procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook and elsewhere.

 

  • Program Development:
  1. Plans seasonal/annual program calendar and develops curriculum in coordination with Education staff
  2. Facilitates Early Childhood Education Programs.
  3. Evaluates programs and their effectiveness, based on feedback, attendance, and other relevant factors.
  4. Generates marketing collateral (online and print) and promotes Early Childhood Education Programs.

 

  • Operational Management:
  1. Manages daily/weekly logistics of programs (prepares rosters, schedules animal visitors and reviews safety procedures).
  2. Oversees the upkeep and cleanliness of the Little Learners Cabin by purchasing program materials and supplies for activities.
  3. Facilitates internal communications (event forms, food requests, etc.).
  • Financial Management:
  1. Processes fees, handles confirmations and refunds.
  2. Keeps revenue records, and sets and meets revenue goals consistent with Zoo standards
  3. Manages all aspects of program budgeting, registration process, processing of income and associated reporting.
  4. Plans, trains, and directs work of program guides.
  5. Evaluates performance and resolves any issues.
  6. Manages external relationships as appropriate.

  1. Maintains external partnerships to extend program reach and increase community connections.
  2. Works to develop new organizational and community partnerships.

  1. Assists with special projects and helps other Zoo employees as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises toddler intern as needed. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, applicable laws, and relevant labor laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  

QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have good organizational skills and exceptional people skills, including the ability to provide excellent customer service and personal attention to zoo visitors of all ages. The ideal candidate for the position will have completed some undergraduate coursework in biology, Zoology, Ecology or education.

 

EDUCATION:  BA/BS College degree from a four-year college or university with some coursework in biological sciences or education preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:   12 ECE units or equivalent training or experience working with toddlers and their families.
