Job Description:
The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) seeks an accomplished and creative Communications and Social Media Specialist to join the team at our Dupont Circle headquarters in Washington, DC. The Specialist provides wide-ranging communications, social media, technology, and development support to NAAEE’s programs and outreach efforts throughout North America and beyond.
Key responsibilities include supporting NAAEE’s communications efforts and managing the Association’s social media presence, as well as writing and editing web copy, press releases, and reports, and moderating user-generated content on eePRO, NAAEE’s online professional development hub for the field of EE. In addition, the Specialist assists with producing NAAEE’s annual report, promoting our annual conferences, developing strategies to advance our reach via social media, and managing donor information. Strong preference for candidates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and at least 2-3 years of communications experience, with expertise in social media, and a background in environmental education, conservation, science, or related fields. We’re looking for a team player with exemplary communication skills, as well as the ability to work with a diversity of cultures and backgrounds, demonstrating a commitment to cultural competency, inclusion, and respect in all interactions.
The prospective candidate should be proficient in all aspects of MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google Docs, and social media scheduling tools such as Hootsuite. Experience with Drupal and other CMS platforms and membership platforms, such as CiviCRM, is a plus. I. Major Functions:
The Communications and Social Media Specialist helps support NAAEE’s communication and marketing efforts, including print and online media, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
YouTube), our family of websites, and outreach to members and supporters. The Communications and Social Media Specialist will help ensure that all communications and fundraising efforts align with NAAEE’s strategic framework and the goals of ee360, a cooperative agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency, as well as other programs. This individual works with colleagues in all program areas to advance eePRO, NAAEE’s online professional learning site, and assists NAAEE staff in developing its annual report, fundraising campaigns, special projects, creative new ideas, and general communications.
I. ee360
Acts as point of contact for all communication efforts related to NAAEE’s multi-year, collaborative program, ee360:
1. Implement the communications strategy for ee360, including social media and online and print media outreach
2. Write content related to ee360 for the web, social media, press releases, and other related communication needs
3. Oversee promotion of ee360 and its activities on eePRO and social media, assisting with the development of communication pieces, including an internal ee360 newsletter
4. Attend meetings with partners and staff to gain an understanding of ee360 activities
II. General Communications
Helps manage communications related work for NAAEE:
1. Support the implementation of NAAEE communications strategy
2. Write copy for web, press releases, annual conference, social media, and other communication needs
3. Oversee all social media channels for NAAEE
4. Conduct outreach to online and print media outlets
5. Work with NAAEE staff and designers on program advertisement, fliers, conference exhibit displays and signage
6. Manage webinar and meeting video recording, production, captioning, and uploading to NAAEE YouTube channel
7. Create Digital Brand Guidelines as part of the overall communications strategy
8. Participate in web content planning meetings as part of the overall communications strategy
III. NAAEE Donor Management and Fundraising:
1. Work with Program Assistant and NAAEE’s development team to track incoming donations, ensuring donors are thanked in a timely manner, and providing creative input to donor appreciation
2. Draft online fundraising strategies for campaigns, including our year-end appeal and a strategy for year-round fundraising online
3. Manage all online fundraising campaigns collaborating with various team members
4. Manage NAAEE’s Annual Report production in collaboration with other team members including drafting and collecting copy, and working with a design consultant and other internal and external stakeholders to produce and distribute final copy
IV. Minimum Skills and Experience Required:
1. Education: Bachelor’s degree (A degree in environmental education, communications, or conservation is a plus.)
2. Experience: Must have at least 3 years of communications experience
3. Skills and Abilities: Excellent writing and communication skills, including project management, creative writing, editing, social media, and proofreading. Also must have an ability to work efficiently, with flexibility, creativity, initiative, positive energy, and good humor. Ability to work independently as required but also working effectively as a team member. Have the skills to juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and exercise tact and diplomacy. Enthusiastically represents NAAEE to external partners, members, funders, and other stakeholders. Position requires an individual who is culturally competent and can work with individuals representing a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. This position is designed for an individual who is a self-starter and is eager to learn and grow professionally.
* Preferred Skills:
• Familiarity with Drupal, WordPress, or similar content management systems
• Familiarity with social media management/scheduling applications such as Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Buffer, or similar
• Comfortable with video conferencing technology such as Zoom, WebEx, Adobe Connect or similar
• Comfortable using Canva, Adobe CS, or other graphic design software
