Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation’s most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Director of the Northern Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. This is a Senior Wildlife Advocate position that will be responsible for, among other things, leading NRDC’s work in the Northern Rockies region by identifying and engaging in critical policy and management decisions that will result in the long-term conservation of wildlife and other natural resources in the region. The Director will help inform and implement the strategic direction of NRDC’s work in the Northern Rockies, lead substantive advocacy campaigns to advance wildlife conservation, be responsible for fundraising and managing a budget as well as a small staff, and build the presence of NRDC and its work in the region. This position reports to the Senior Director for Wildlife in the Nature Program.

 

Responsibilities

Leading and working on substantive advocacy campaigns that contribute significantly to the conservation of wildlife and other natural resources across the Northern Rockies region;

Developing and executing a strategic vision and direction for NRDC’s portfolio of work in the Northern Rockies region in consultation with senior leadership;

Serving as the point of contact for NRDC’s Northern Rockies office both externally and internally;

Working with NRDC’s Center for Policy Advocacy on federal defense work in Montana and the West;

Working with Development to maintain relationships with current donors and foundations, helping draft funding proposals and reports, and cultivating new donors and business partners to support NRDC’s work in the Northern Rockies;

Collaborating with a wide variety of NRDC colleagues on a range of issues as they relate to Montana and the Northern Rockies;

Working with NRDC’s Communications, Social/Print/Television Media, and Membership teams to highlight and advance NRDC’s work in the Northern Rockies;

Handling various internal administrative matters;

Leading NRDC’s annual Yellowstone Wildlife Donor Trip each spring;

Managing and mentoring individual staff members;

Helping interview and hire both new staff members and interns;

 

Qualifications

JD, MA or other graduate degree(s) in relevant fields;

7-10 years of advocacy experience in a relevant field (ideally wildlife conservation in the Northern Rockies or Western US) with proven leadership and management experience;

Ability to think big about conservation issues in the Northern Rockies and build new campaigns on important issues;

Excellent interpersonal and people skills including experience interacting with donors and foundations;

Availability to travel to other NRDC offices around the country as well as regional travel for substantive work in the Northern Rockies;

Strong writing ability for both formal writing (e.g., comment letters) and informal writing (e.g., blogging);

Strong public-speaking ability in front of various audiences;

Excellent ability to comprehend and explain complicated scientific and legal issues;

Solid understanding of litigation and state and federal government processes;

Ability to effectively work with print, radio, television, and social media;

Ability to work with diverse stakeholder groups and people from a wide array of backgrounds.
