First Course: Climate Impacts: Communication, Facilitation and Stakeholder Capacity Building
Dates: November 4 – December 8, 2018
Instructor: Christa Daniels, Ph.D.
Registration deadline: October 30, 2018
Communities are already facing severe climatic impacts. In just the past few months, communities have experienced devastating wildfires in the American west and catastrophic hurricanes in the Eastern United States. It is clear that we need to support communities in their recovery and help them decrease their vulnerability to future impacts. It is imperative to rethink how we can engage individuals to build the public support and political will to create climate resilient communities.
A scientific study by the Yale Project on Climate Communication found that providing coastal residents with early and accurate storm warnings alone doesn’t result in evacuation. If you are looking to engage community members in taking climate action, providing them with information alone may not work.Uncovering barriers to action, understanding values, and learning how to talk to and with diverse community groups can help you build the public support and political will to tackle climate change.
Through this short course, we will add to our arsenal of strategies to overcome barriers to action. You will learn about communication tactics employed in other successful campaigns that can be used to engage your audience.
