SPP Curriculum & Certification Developer

(Reports to the SPP Project Manager)

This fellowship will facilitate certification and curriculum development for various Sustainability in Prisons Project (SPP) programs; these are well-established programs, currently offering substantial informal education. Most would benefit enormously from added educational resources and structured tracking and certification of student progress and achievement. Development of added educational resources and improved program structure is already underway, but currently under-resourced.

For each SPP certificate program, the fellow would review progress to date, and then coordinate continued development to encompass:

  • identifying program learning objectives (referencing current certification when possible)
  • compiling/inventorying existing educational resources to meet program learning objectives
  • seeking out educational resources to satisfy unmet objectives and/or enhance the program
  • creating a flexible and achievable curriculum, i.e., recommending modes and order of delivery.

Curriculum and Certification Development

  • Coordinate development of two or more new certification programs for SPP programs: likely candidates are statewide gardening and composting programs, and sheep program at Washington State Penitentiary.
  • Participate in updates and enhancements to existing certification programs: likely to include ecological conservation and biology programs at Cedar Creek and Larch Corrections Center.
  • Support tracking and administration of personnel paperwork and data for incarcerated technicians in SPP ecological conservation programs; include recommendations for tracking participants of new certificate programs in developments.

Reporting, Accountability, and Advancing SPP

  • Provide weekly updates to supervisor and to the team every two weeks at SPP staff meetings.
  • Monitor and safeguard health of SPP programs; participate in ongoing program improvement and problem solving.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with all program partners (e.g. guest experts and their organizations) and DOC staff at host prisons.
  • Visit host facilities and SPP programs as needed to attain subject matter expertise, cultivate partnerships, deliver supplies, and be able to represent SPP programming overall.

Administrative Operations

  • Track and administer systems essential to SPP program operations, such as: recording new contacts, maintaining shared files, and checking out electronic equipment (cameras, laptops, clickers).
  • Researching and compiling program and fellowship data, accomplishments and results into tables and summaries for reports for the benefit of SPP and as required by funding source.
  • Other duties as needed, including printing, copying, mailing, scheduling, honoraria and mileage forms, etc.

Educational Opportunities

  • Work in a collaborative, engaged community of corrections professionals, scientists, researchers, technicians, faculty, staff, and students.
  • As time allows, respond to SPP staff requests for review, research, and co-authoring
  • As time and resources allow, present on SPP and fellowship activities at conferences, publish articles, and actively share knowledge with other groups about engaging the incarcerated community in conservation and education.

Required Qualifications

  • Available to work mainly during office hours Monday-Friday (some hours may be flexible)
  • Subject-matter and technical expertise are desirable, but can be taught on the job and are not as critical as excellent social and communication skills.
  • Current driver’s license and available and reliable vehicle for trips to prisons in western Washington (mileage will be reimbursed)
  • Willingness and ability to work safely in a correctional setting and to communicate and collaborate with Corrections staff and supervisors to address concerns and respond to inmate requests; employment contingent on successful Correction’s security clearance (so program access is possible!)
  • Willingness and ability to follow directions, collaborate on projects, and give and hear feedback
