I. Job Summary

The Recycling Education and Outreach Coordinator position is dedicated to assisting our municipal partners meet composting and recycling goals through educational programs and outreach. Emphasis will be on conducting recycling education to engage customers and increase participation in recycling and composting programs.

This position will serve as a company representative in the local community and with customers.  Waste Management’s Recycling Education & Outreach Coordinators create and implement educational programs targeting waste reduction, recycling and composting through a variety of community education tactics. Each day brings new opportunities ranging from designing a new multifamily recycling campaign, to teaching preschoolers about truck safety, to working with a business manager to implement on-site compost services, to giving a tour of a recycling center and working with college students as part of WM’s award-winning Recycle Corps summer intern program.

This position will office out of our South Sound Hauling location in Auburn, WA with travel to our Kirkland Market Area office as business needs require.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Working with municipal staff to develop and implement recycling and composting education programs.
  • Identifying, developing and conducting educational programs for various community organizations, municipal partners, businesses and multifamily complexes.
  • Developing and distributing recycling and composting education and marketing pieces for WM’s programs.
  • Conducting site surveys and waste audits to determine garbage, organics and recycling service levels, and making recommendations to improve diversion.
  • Working with businesses and property managers to provide information and resources that promote recycling, composting and waste reduction.
  • Arranging for new recycling and composting services, and conducting on-site training programs with customers.
  • Designing and delivering presentations focused on achieving recycling goals and driving awareness of WM efforts in the community..
  • Cultivating and improving company relationships by attending and participating in public events, meetings and other programs on behalf of company.
  • Assisting with management of WM’s award winning recycling education summer intern program.
  • Occasional weekend and evening event work is required.

IV. Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job

A. Education and Experience

 

  • Education: Associate’s Degree (accredited) in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Education, Public Administration or a related field, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 2 years of relevant work experience.

 


 Preferred

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent experience in environmental studies, resource management, education, sales or communications.
  • Organizational, educational, excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Three to five years of experience working with outreach, education, resource management, education, sales or communications.
  • Knowledge of recycling industry.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese or Korean.

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Valid Driver License and reliable transportation

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Demonstrated expertise and skills in environmental, sustainability and/or education fields.
  • Adept at understanding meaning of contract language.
  • Organized and able to implement strategies and plans effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Expert small and large group presentation skills.
  • Strong knowledge of WM products and operations. 
  • Aware and adaptable in communication styles.
  • Able to use influencing skills with community stakeholders, customers and internally within WM.
