Job Description

Length: Term of positions is 47 weeks; full-time commitment 5-days per week.

 

Location: Seattle, WA

 

Living Allowance $510/week, with Health Care available if desired

 

AmeriCorps Award: This position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program.  Value of education award is $5,920.00 (pre-tax).

 

Educational Status: Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, environmental planning, environmental science, geography, public health or related field.

 

Public Land Corps: Individuals who enter the program between 21 and 30 years of age may be eligible for the Public Land Corps hiring authority upon successful completion of the program.

 

Start Date: Projected start date is February 19, 2019

 

Specific Training: Mentored work experience is provided, and specific training to meet individual interests and needs.

Specifics about the position:

The Fellow will benefit communities in the Pacific Northwest, potentially Washington, Oregon and Idaho, by facilitating community-led natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation projects that connect diverse and under-served populations with close-to-home nature and the outdoors. Work products will include public engagement materials and events, site inventories and analyses, articulated vision, goal and objective statements, and planning and design recommendations, all of which will be stakeholder and community-driven. Projects will support protection and enhancement of public lands and ecosystems on both sides of the Cascade Mountains, from maritime to arid inland landscapes. Project work will explore how to balance public access and recreation with conservation in these landscapes. The long term results will include increased miles of trails, acres of conserved land, and associated improved public access.

 

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct inventories and analyses of relevant information related to trail planning, and open space/ natural resource management planning
  • Develop planning frameworks, including community engagement strategies, vision/goal/objective statements, and concept and action planning.
  • Craft project recommendations that address the key issues and opportunities identified by the project partner/s and stakeholders/public, support the vision/goals/objectives and guide implementation.

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Landscape design & map production skills are preferred but not required.
  • Spanish (or Cambodian/Khmer, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Somali, Tagalog, or Vietnamese) language skills preferred but not required.

* Preference will be given to qualified, local candidates (currently living in commuting distance to the NPS office).

 

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, environmental planning, environmental science, geography, public health or related field.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possession of a current valid driver’s license
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States

 

 

This position will be required to submit periodic reports and a final report during their term of service.
