Hoonah, Alaska is a small, but bustling rural community on Chichagof Island. The island is home of the Huna Tlingit and that cultural identify is very important to many of the people that live there. Because of its location in rural Alaska, most people in Hoonah rely on the venison, halibut, salmon, shellfish, and many species of plants to stock their freezers each year. These resources provide nutrition and a cultural connection. Understanding how these resources may change is a critical component of preparing for the future. We propose to understand the risks to our marine and economic resources and then create jobs that may help mitigate the impact of those risks, as well as educate our youth on our changing marine systems. If we succeed in our goal, this project will help both current and future generations of natural resource users. There are many facets to make this position successful. You will need to immerse yourself in the culture and stories of Hoonah while you research what resources are important to the community. Engage multiple stakeholders and build your network of colleagues throughout Southeast Alaska. Challenge yourself and build for a future career by assimilating datasets and organizing a comprehensive risk assessment of subsistence resources in Hoonah. This project should excite you, in knowing that your work will benefit the community and be part of a larger effort to create jobs around natural resource management in Hoonah.
