Citizen science instructor

Reports to: School outreach coordinator and school & public programs manager
Status: Part time, hourly—this is a seasonal position
Hours of work: Varying: three- to nine-hour shifts, one to four days a week depending on instructor availability and partner school needs. Shifts typically fall Monday–Friday within the hours of 6am–5pm. Approximately 170 hours for the season. Nine positions available. Must be available for a minimum of three weekdays per week; some flexibility will be allowed.
Dates needed: February 20–June 30, 2019. Required training dates February 20–22 and February 25–28.

About the Seattle Aquarium:
The Seattle Aquarium is owned by the City of Seattle and under nonprofit management. The Aquarium currently serves over 850,000 visitors and 40,000 schoolchildren and their teachers annually. Guided by its mission of Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment, the Seattle Aquarium has a realistic plan for phased growth based on record-setting attendance, membership and fundraising growth, an energized board of directors and professional management. The current annual budget is $18 million.
Position overview:
Seattle Aquarium citizen science instructors work with a professional team of marine educators to provide an in-depth science program serving approximately 400 local high school students and their teachers. Duties include instructing diverse groups of high school students in varied topics including field-based data collection methods, identification of Northwest intertidal species, and the scientific practices as defined by A Framework for K-12 Science Education.
Primary job functions:
- Conduct programs at the Aquarium, on local beaches and in formal classrooms for diverse groups of high school students and their teachers.
- Teach lessons on field-based data collection methods, identification of Northwest intertidal species and scientific practices.
- Work collaboratively, maintaining a high level of communication, in a team environment.
- Maintain availability for agreed-upon training and teaching dates through June 2019.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned, such as organizing of materials and supplies, printing, assembling program kits, reviewing curriculum and supporting students as they present their research projects.
Required skills and abilities:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- Comfort handling intertidal animals after provided training.
- Ability to work as part of team and/or independently.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Demonstrated reliability, responsibility and enthusiasm.
- Ability to be flexible in a rapidly changing work environment.
- Basic marine and conservation knowledge with strong knowledge of Northwest marine life preferred.
- Professional demeanor and understanding of appropriate educator conduct and group management.
Experience, education and certifications:
We will consider various combinations of relevant experience and education to meet minimum requirements.
- Required:
- Completed high school and 18 years of age or older.
- Minimum of one year experience teaching programs at a zoo/aquarium or other informal education facility, or in a school or classroom setting.
- Experience working with diverse racial and socio-economic audiences.
- Washington state driver’s license or other state valid license and good driving record. Must complete a motor vehicle records check as part of the hiring process.*
- Adult, child and baby first aid and CPR/AED training and certification proof required by end of training (February 28). Online courses are not accepted. Certification opportunities will be provided during training for those who are not already certified.
- Preferred:
- B.A. or B.S. in education, child development, recreation, environmental science, biology or a related field or equivalent experience.
- Field research experience.
Working conditions:
- Flexible schedule and ability to commit to the hours and dates of work as described.
- Must be able to spend extended periods of times outdoors during all weather conditions (extreme heat or rain).
- Must be able to sit, stand and/or walk for varied and extended periods of time while interacting with public.
- Heavy to moderate vocal demands to project talks and announcements and to direct an audience in loud areas.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds, unassisted.
Pay and benefits:
$15/hour. Temporary staff are not eligible for benefits but accrue paid sick time and are paid an additional $0.75/hour to assist with transportation costs.
