Marine Science Instructor
Posted: Open to internal and external applicants
Reports to: On-site school programs coordinator
Status: Part time, hourly—this is a seasonal position.
Hours of work: Varying: Shifts are typically three to seven hours, two to three days per week, Monday–Friday, 7am–7pm. Approximately 190 hours for the season. Five positions available.
Dates needed: February 20–June 21, 2019. Required training dates February 20–22 and February 25–28.

About the Seattle Aquarium:
The Seattle Aquarium is owned by the City of Seattle and under nonprofit management. The Aquarium currently serves over 850,000 visitors and 40,000 schoolchildren and their teachers annually. Guided by its mission of Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment, the Seattle Aquarium has a realistic plan for phased growth based on record-setting attendance, membership and fundraising growth, an energized board of directors and professional management. The current annual budget is $18 million.
Position overview:
Seattle Aquarium marine science instructors work with a professional team of marine educators, teaching a wide range of audiences from Pre-K through 12th grade about various marine topics relating to the Puget Sound. These programs will be taught at the Aquarium, local schools and various field locations throughout the Puget Sound region.
Primary job functions:
- Instruct hands-on classroom programs at the Aquarium for diverse groups of families and school-age visitors with their teachers.
- Instruct hands-on outreach programming for diverse audiences at schools, community centers, outdoor field sites and other off-site locations.
- Work collaboratively in a team environment, maintaining a high level of communication.
- Maintain availability for agreed-upon training and teaching dates through June 2019.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned, such as organization of materials and supplies, printing, assembling program kits and curriculum review.
Required special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to work as part of team and/or independently.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Demonstrated reliability, responsibility and enthusiasm.
- Ability to be flexible in a rapidly changing work environment.
- Basic marine and conservation knowledge with strong knowledge of Northwest marine life preferred.
- Comfort handling intertidal animals (training provided).
- Professional demeanor and understanding of appropriate educator conduct and group management.
Experience, education and certifications:
We will consider various combinations of relevant experience and education to meet minimum requirements.
- Required:
- Completed high school and 18 years of age or older.
- A minimum of one year experience teaching programs at a zoo/aquarium or other informal education facility or in a school or classroom setting.
- Experience working with diverse racial and socio-economic audiences.
- Washington state driver’s license or other state valid license and good driving record required. Must complete a motor vehicles records check as part of the hiring process.*
- Adult, child and baby first aid and CPR/AED training and certification proof required by end of training (February 28). Online courses are not accepted. Certification opportunities will be provided during training for those who are not already certified.
- Preferred:
- B.A./B.S. in education, child development, recreation, environmental science, biology or a related field or equivalent experience.
Working conditions:
- Flexible schedule and able to commit to the hours and dates of work as described.
- High energy needed to work with public of all ages for duration of shift.
- Must be able to spend long periods of time outdoors during all weather conditions (extreme heat or rain).
- Must be able to sit, stand or walk for varied and extended periods of time while interacting with the public.
- Heavy to moderate vocal demands to project talks and announcements and to direct an audience in loud areas.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds, unassisted.
Pay and benefits:
$15/hour. Temporary staff are not eligible for benefits but accrue paid sick time and are paid an additional $0.75/hour to assist with transportation costs.
