Washington Sea Grant (WSG) is a broad-based university program of integrated research, education and outreach dedicated to development of knowledge for use in the marine environment. One of the nation’s four original Sea Grant Colleges and among the largest in the national Sea Grant network, the program promotes the understanding, conservation, and sustainable use of marine resources. It is part of the College of the Environment at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Marine Advisory Services (MAS) is the principal field-based outreach group within WSG.
The MAS group at Washington Sea Grant based in Shelton, WA requires a Temporary Research Analyst 2 to implement and coordinate phytoplankton and marine biotoxin research projects and activities.
Duties and responsibilities:
• Prepare weekly, monthly and yearly data summaries and interpretation for partners including statistical analyses of phytoplankton, toxin and environmental data.
• Participate on the SoundToxins steering committee, Puget Sound Environmental Monitoring Marine Water Quality working group and Azadinium research team.
• Review and ensure accuracy of data input into the SoundToxins database by monitors around Puget Sound using the Quality Assurance Project Plan.
• Provide comments and improvement suggestions to the NOAA relational database managers to ensure accuracy and the development of visualization tools.
• Support SoundToxins monitors by facilitating supply needs, on-site training, assistance with data collection, phytoplankton identification and communications.
• Monitor the SoundToxins hotline, on a to-be-determined basis, responding to requests using SoundToxins protocols and forwarding inquiries as needed to others on the SoundToxins team.
• Collect marine water samples, once a week, using specific procedures and use light microscopy to identify the plankton and upload results into the online SoundToxins database.
• Educate the public and partners regarding the SoundToxins program’s purpose and activities at community events and partner meetings.
• Manage the SoundToxins website with current project research, projects and partners.
• Coordinate and implement annual SoundToxins trainings and meetings.
• Compile data and generate narrative reports, tables, charts and graphs of historic and current SoundToxins data for publication in scientific journals.
• Monitor and assess levels of harmful algal toxins in shellfish using ELISA and other appropriate analytical techniques.
• Perform related duties as required.
Requirements: A Bachelor’s Degree is required including college-level course work in statistics AND one year of work experience as a Research Analyst 1 OR equivalent education/experience.
DESIRED:
• Marine phytoplankton monitoring and identification experience.
• Experience with mentoring volunteers or students.
• Familiarity with Macintosh and PC computer programs and data entry.
• Excellent communication skills and experience in educating people about marine phytoplankton communities.
• Familiarity with Puget Sound.
• Prior experience with the “SoundToxins” program.
• Participation in Puget Sound marine phytoplankton identification workshops
Conditions of Employment:
Part Time, up to 25 hours/week.
Work schedule will include day, weekend and some evening hours, not to exceed 25 hours/week, along with outdoor sampling in all weather.
