Job Description

Join our team at the Map and Geospatial Hub — ASU’s library-based center for geographic information systems (GIS) data, aerial photography, maps, and related geospatial technologies — as our new Map and GIS Specialist. This is a full-time, 100% FTE position responsible for a dynamic range of duties related to inventorying, organizing, and processing multiple flows of physical and digital cartographic resources. Materials in question consist of tens of thousands of physical maps, aerial and other remotely-sensed photography, and other specialized and/or irregularly formatted library assets related to maps and map-making. The selected candidate will contribute to wide range of projects related to the inward and outward flow of physical and digital materials through library catalog systems, as well as contribute to new ways to aid the ASU community, and broader public, find, utilize, and add value to map-based resources.

Essential Duties

  • Provides specialized reference services (via email, phone, or in person) to diverse library patrons related to maps, geographic imagery, and geospatial data
  • Responds promptly to library service requests related to relevant maps and GIS resources
  • Manages diverse workflows related to the processing of print and digital cartographic materials, including filing, shifting, relocating, sorting, and reorganizing large quantities of maps and digital files
  • Organizes and maintains inventories of library materials in multiple spreadsheet formats
  • Works closely with Map and Geospatial Hub and other library staff, including the geospatial data manager, to ensure proper GIS or digital map file formatting and transformation procedures
  • Performs standard GIS operations, including raster georectification and vector geometry and attribute editing
  • Creates web map indexes of cartographic collections to improve discoverability and access
  • Authors and edits geospatial metadata according to appropriate SOPs and other technical guides
  • Performs collection maintenance through review of library records to ensure accuracy of resource location and correct status of library holdings
  • Contributes to Map and Geospatial Hub web pages with up-to-date information about workshop and GIS training event and accessing maps, aerials, and geospatial data resources
  • Coordinates calendar for department events, including to workshops, GIS trainings, and other special events
  • Contributes to documenting internal workflows and improving efficiencies
  • May supervise student workers, interns, and other staff

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Seven (7) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in geographic information systems (GIS) experience (2 years)
  • Experience with web mapping applications, including, but not limited to ArcGIS Online and related Esri software
  • Experience manipulating various spreadsheet and database file formats
  • Experience with a range of file formats, including imagery, GIS, and CAD files
  • Experience with raster georectification procedures
  • Experience with editing vector geometries
  • Experience with digital image processing software
  • Experience with specialized map collections, including collections of remotely sensed imagery
  • Experience in academic or professional library work environments
  • Experience working with specialized library classification systems, including Library of Congress classes and subclasses

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods
  • of sitting, standing and walking Frequent physical demands include stooping, bending, reaching,
  • lifting up to 25 pounds and pushing objects of varying weights up to 100 pounds
  • Exposure to dust and other airborne materials
  • Regularly required to access books and other physical items from shelves up to 7 feet in height
