Description of Work Unit

Housing & Dining Services (HDS) is a multifaceted auxiliary organization responsible for management of on-campus housing facilities, residential dining, conferences, and the CSU Mountain Campus. Other areas within HDS include the RamCard, communications, sustainability, facilities, human resources, technology services, workplace education, and business services. Approximately 450 full-time staff and 1,700 hourly and student staff serve the nearly 8,000 students who live on campus, in addition to other campus and community guests. Our priority is providing our residents and guests with safe living environments, quality dining, and exceptional out-of-classroom experiences. We accomplish this through sound fiscal and operational management strategies, and an emphasis on the development of programs and services that are designed to enhance personal growth and global engagement. The integrated Communications and Sustainability offices within HDS are an award-winning team that works to support the mission of the department. Communications professionals on the team specialize in a wide range of practices from brand strategy, marketing, art design, multimedia, and web development to public relations and crisis management. Sustainability professionals on the team create and implement innovative sustainability programs and campaigns rooted in outreach and education. The team as a whole commits to operating through a socially just, inclusive, and sustainable lens.

Position SummaryThe Assistant Director of Sustainability is responsible for providing project management for sustainability initiatives within Housing & Dining Services at Colorado State, one of the top-ranked sustainability programs in the country. This position leads efforts to integrate sustainable practices into student housing, food systems, transportation, construction, maintenance, purchasing, and custodial procedures within the department and in collaboration with campus and community partners. This hands-on position is also responsible for actively engaging residential students in experiential learning and engagement. The Assistant Director of Sustainability reports to the Director of Communications & Sustainability.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, environmental studies, environmental communications, or related field
  • Minimum five years professional experience in coordinating, organizing, and implementing sustainability programs and events within higher education or for a large organization
  • Experience managing student engagement and leadership programs
  • Demonstrated project management experience and collaboration skills in working with different committees, organizations, and audiences
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills to chair meetings, train staff, engage students, problem-solve, and evaluate business needs for existing and new projects
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences and an understanding of the intersectionality of environment, economics, and social justice within sustainability

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental affairs, student affairs, environmental communications, or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully create new projects within a university setting, understanding of how to institutionalize new sustainability efforts, and how to develop programs that advance departmental and university strategic objectives and mission
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability policy, practices, processes, and assessment (STARS, annual reports, strategic planning, return on investment calculations, climate action plan, greenhouse gas inventories, etc.)
  • Experience with high-ranking and innovative sustainability programs (Gold or Platinum STARS, Gold or Platinum LEED, living labs, nationally-recognized programs, etc.)
  • Higher education teaching experience

  • Hire, supervise, and coach full-time Sustainability Coordinator
  • Supervise and advise the Eco Leaders Peer Education Program:
  • Recruit, interview, select, supervise, and manage payroll for twenty Eco Leaders in the residence halls and four Eco Leaders in Aggie Village apartments
  • Develop curriculum and co-teach two credit courses for the Eco Leaders (GES130 and GES330)
  • Direct Eco Leaders campaigns, service learning projects, and independent projects
  • Recruit, interview, select, supervise, and manage payroll for three sustainability interns, including a compost intern, undergraduate sustainability intern, and graduate sustainability intern
  • Represent the Director of Sustainability in their absence

Duty/Responsibility

  • Direct and serve as project manager for more than 100 departmental sustainability initiatives annually including planning, implementing, and reporting results
  • Chair the Housing & Dining Services Sustainability Fund Committee, hear proposals and make purchasing decisions for approved projects, and report project outcomes to the Business Manager
  • Identify and implement best practices for composting program and zero waste events for Conference and Event Services, Mountain Campus, and Dining Services
  • Co-partner with Housing & Dining Services’ Facility Planner to manage LEED certification for facility projects
  • Take a leadership role in strategic planning and budget management for sustainability across Housing & Dining Services

Percentage Of Time: 30%Job Duty Category: Engagement and Campus Collaboration

Duty/Responsibility

  • Work jointly with academic colleges and the City of Fort Collins to establish and manage living laboratories (i.e. composting program, bee hives, bike repair and education room, and farm-to-table initiatives).
  • Serve on campus-wide committees including the President’s Sustainability Committee, STARS (Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System) Team, Campus Bicycle Advisory Committee, and other appropriate campus-wide committees
  • Chair the Live Green Team, the internal Housing & Dining Services sustainability visioning group
  • Serve as a resource for developing and facilitating training across campus for students as well as staff
  • Collaborate with Dining Services to implement sustainable dining practices including increasing the percentage of local /organic food purchased year by year, improving food waste diverted from the landfill, and increasing green dining products purchased (i.e. to go containers, packaging, etc.)
  • Collaborate with Housing & Dining Facilities to coordinate and expand sustainable purchasing guidelines, materials recycling, and green cleaning, maintenance, and operation practices
  • Collaborate with the Housing & Dining Services Communications Office and CSU External Relations to create sustainability reports, surveys, articles, and multimedia content to support and promote sustainability initiatives
  • Collaborate with CSU Alternative Transportation Manager to increase alternative modes of transportation within Housing & Dining Services
  • Manage sustainability tours of Housing & Dining Services facilities to academic classes, the campus community, community partners, and guests
