TITLE: Restoration Specialist
LOCATION: Ventura County, California

START TARGET: February 8, 2019

SUMMARY

The Santa Clara River Conservancy (SCRC) is seeking a restoration specialist (full/part-time) to manage and implement its restoration program along the Santa Clara River in Ventura County. The Santa Clara River is the largest, relatively-unaltered river system in southern California, supporting thousands of acres
of prime agricultural land, essential local water supplies and multiple sensitive animals, plants, birds, and critical habitats. SCRC is implementing several large-scale restorations to remove Arundo and other invasive plants from the river bottom, including two multi-year efforts funded by the California Wildlife Conservation Board. SCRC is working closely with restoration scientists at UC Santa Barbara to implement a strategic plan for Arundo removal in the Santa Clara River watershed. SCRC’s restoration program is part of its larger mission to ensure the sustainable use of the river, protect its critical floodplain and associated habitat, and expand public access and recreation to and along the river.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The initial primary duties of SCRC’s Restoration Specialist will be to assist with planning, supervision, implementation, monitoring, and reporting for several major invasive plant removal and native habitat restoration projects underway along the Santa Clara River. The target plant for these restoration efforts is the invasive Arundo donax, within the cottonwood-willow riparian woodland ecological context of the Santa Clara River. The ideal candidate will bring interest, knowledge, and field and research experience in plant ecology and hydrology, restoration of riparian habitats, and environmental monitoring, including biodiversity assessment. The position requires extensive communication with government agencies and landowners, working with regulatory permitting and environmental assessment processes, and close collaboration with technical field staff and scientific advisors and others from partner organizations.

SCRC seeks a candidate who is self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic organizational setting. The candidate will be career-minded and able to help build the future restoration program work of SCRC, including through grant writing and applications, strategic restoration planning and research, and promotion of SCRC’s work in professional settings.
