We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Communications Manager to join an expanding team. Climate Week NYC is the largest Climate Week in the world, and this position will be central to driving it forward. The Communications Manager will report to the Head of Climate Week NYC, who is based in London, with a dotted line to the US Executive Director for the non-Climate Week NYC related components of the role.

This is a crucial role within the global work of The Climate Group and will serve as the communications lead in North America. The post holder’s primary responsibility will be supporting the annual Climate Week NYC while also supporting the broader communications needs of The Climate Group, including establishing themselves as our key figure in the US for media and communications.

 

About the team

The Climate Week team is growing in response to the expansion and success of the Climate Week. It is overseen by the International Communications Director, who line manages the Head of Climate Week. This role will recruit and manage an Events Co-Ordinator in the NYC office who will be in post for part of the year. The Head of Climate Week is based in our London HQ and frequently travels to NYC. The post holder will also support communications in the US and for this will have a dotted line responsibility to the Executive Director, North America, based in the NYC office. Key colleagues will include those leading our major programmatic activity, including our RE100 renewable energy initiative, EV100 electric vehicle program and the Under2 Coalition.

The Climate Week team will work closely with the broader communications team, including the Media and Corporate Communications team which leads on press and media, and the business communications team, which leads on the communications of our business programs.

 

Key Responsibilities

Climate Week NYC (60%)

Play a lead role in our critical relationships – helping maintain, develop and deliver on our key partnerships that enable us to run Climate Week NYC, as well as deputize for the Head of Climate Week as a key liaison point

Responsibility for supporting the annual Climate Week NYC program that takes place during Climate Week NYC each September, with a focus on engaging with external groups and executing an effective communications strategy with them

Supporting the Head of Climate Week on a range of issues including marketing, planning, brand, social media strategy and external affairs

Manage at least one Climate Week NYC Event Co-ordinator, due to start in Summer, and whose main role will be to support the administration on the Climate Week NYC events program

Play a key role in creating landmark events during Climate Week NYC, including our own anchor events with key partners, and create content relating to Climate Week

Work with the Media and Corporate Communications team to produce content and provide assets to support our press, media and commercial strategies

Support other members of the communications team, where required

Work with the broader communications team to ensure that sponsor deliverables relating to communication are met

 

Promotion of The Climate Group in North America (20%)

Utilize the media and other channels to promote the work of The Climate Group, and raise our profile and influence amongst key audience in North America

Serve as the communications lead for the US office, liaising with global colleagues to ensure that US activity, such as policy campaigns targeted at US audiences, receive sufficient communications support

Support the broader objectives of The Climate Group, including linking the communications team to the work of the business actions teams (such as RE100) and the Under 2 Coalition

 

Supporting climate issues and initiatives related to program activity and income generation (20%)

Taking advantage of topical issues and concerns in the US to extent the work of The Climate Group in a way that supports fundraising potential

Taking an entrepreneurial approach to managing relationships with stakeholders and partners, creating opportunities to expand the profile and reputation of The Climate Group through your own initiative

Support the development and implementation of campaigns, events and other activities to support the objectives of The Climate Group

 

About you

You are motivated and ambitious, with a natural talent for getting things done and bringing people on board. The high-profile nature of the campaigns that you will be working on, and the partners that we work with, make this the ideal role for someone who can spot opportunities, take initiative, and see ideas through to the end. This role is collaborative in nature, working with a talented team across a range of disciplines. As the senior communications lead in the US, the success of this role will be helped by your ability to work with people in a creative, collaborative and engaging manner. A ‘self-starter’ attitude is a must, alongside the confidence to try out new ideas and take managed risks.

 

Essential:

Experience in delivering integrated communication plans, including social media planning, incorporating knowledge of public affairs, policy and corporate communications

Excellent written and verbal communications skills including experience in producing effective press releases for US audiences and dealing directly with print and broadcast media

Ability to understand key topical issues and focus our communications to those areas where we can have greatest influence

Excellent engagement and networking skills including stakeholder engagement at a senior level

A strong entrepreneurial approach, developing initiatives from scratch, securing buy-in, and working with colleagues to secure funding when required

Project management and experience working with global and virtual teams

Negotiation skills, ability to progress projects while listening to and liaising with multiple stakeholders

Strong attention to detail

 

Desirable:

Experience in supporting communications demands in a commercial environment

Experience in line management

An additional language, particularly Spanish

This position will be based in our New York City office, near Columbus Circle.
