Tree Communities: Alder, Cottonwood and Willow Medicine

Saturday February 9th, 10:00-5:00, $125/person, $100 early bird registration by 1/19

Skokomish elder Bruce Miller once said, “The trees were our first teachers.” Trees are models of adaptability, resourcefulness, and collaboration. They live in one place their entire lives, building the structures and relationships they need to thrive. In this workshop we will investigate three common trees that contribute to the health and diversity of Northwest landscapes, especially in wetlands and riparian zones. We will make pain-relieving medicine from bark and buds, create rooting water for stimulating plant starts, and build a small structure from willow. Participants will take home a curriculum that covers the ecological, cultural, medicinal, and technological significance of these three wondrous trees. Taught by Elise Krohn and Elizabeth Campbell.

Apothecary Cocktails & Cordials with Katie Rains

Monday February 11th, 6:00-8:30, $50/person

Cordials, bitters, and shrubs are all delightful ways to preserve the medicine and season of many plants to enjoy during the cold and grey of winter. In this class, we will learn a brief history of distillation, the basics of making cordials, bitters, and shrubs, as well as simple and delicious cocktail recipes that you can share with the ones you love. Together, we will make elderberry shrub, chamomile and rose cordial, and warming dandelion root bitters. Plus we will taste several cocktail recipes. Light snacks will be provided. Participants must be 21 years or older and will take home small bottles of each of our homemade libations, along with recipes.
