This position is responsible for the overall direction, management and operation of the Robinson Nature Center including, acting as liaison with the Robinson Foundation.

 

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Performs mid management and advanced professional level natural resources work, which may include supervisory responsibility, under general supervision from an administrative or technical superior. Work may include overseeing and providing professional expertise in matters related to natural resource operations on County parkland, including the full range of field operations, such as land acceptance, reforestation, park ranger and enforcement of parkland, open spaces and natural resource regulations. Or, developing and overseeing the activities at the Robinson Nature Center, applying expertise to ensure high quality presentation of the Center and its features in supporting a variety of educational and public enrichment events, activities and programs. Accountable for the effective overall operation and maintenance of the facility.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the overall supervision and management of the Robinson Nature Center.

Responsible for operational policy and procedures including hours of operation, security, safety practices, visitor rules.

Direct supervision of Natural Resources Program Manager II, Administrative Aid, and two Natural Resources Specialists.

Resolves operational issues to ensure that all phases of the Center operate efficiently.

Prepares regular written reports to the Natural Resource Division Superintendent, Bureau Chief and Director of Recreation and Parks

Performs a wide variety of public relations tasks including overseeing the creation of newsletters, press releases, and social media.

Attends community meetings to represent the Department and the Nature Center.

Partners with the Robinson Foundation Board of Trustees on strategic long-range planning to ensure innovative and quality educational programming.

Partners with staff and Robinson Foundation to prepare grant requests for capital funds and to develop strategies for major fund-raising campaigns.

Coordinates with the Office of Law and Risk Management concerning contracts and other legal matters related to the Nature Center.

Determines general guidelines for curriculum and exhibit content.

Works with special interest groups to create relationships and partnerships that are mutually beneficial.

Coordination with the Bureau of Parks and Bureau of Facilities for maintenance and repairs.

Manages and coordinates operating and program budgets. Insures program and staff costs are balanced with revenues.

Completes fiscal and financial reports as required.

Ensures staff compliance with Department and County policies for PDQ use, petty cash, and purchasing.

Works with Department of Recreation and Parks Marketing Team and the Public Information Office to develop marketing strategies for programs, events, and rentals.

This position is considered essential and will be required to work emergency situations to include staffing the Department Operations Center and or the Emergency Operations Center.

Responsible for identifying and applying good sustainability practices into all aspects of Department operations.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises four full-time staff members. This includes recruitment, hiring and evaluation of staff.

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree and three years of related experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

A Bachelor’s Degree or higher or equivalent experience in environmental education, environmental science, natural resources management, or nonprofit management.

Experience working in a nature center

Knowledgeable in environmental education, natural history, natural resources management, conservation and the flora & fauna of Maryland.

High attention to detail and demonstrated ability to follow through on projects, commitments and communications.

Vision and initiative in bringing new ideas and energy to operation and productivity of the Nature Center organization.

Excellent organizational & managerial skills with the ability manage multiple projects a one time.

Fundraising and grant writing experience.

A broad knowledge of organizational management, land/resource management, fund raising and the supervision of employees (full and part-time) as well as contractual and volunteer staff.

Must have flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends as required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL SKILLS AND REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

Class C Maryland Driver’s License or equivalent issued by state of residence.

May require Maryland State Certification in Forestry or related area
