Basic Purpose

The intern will assist the Parks & Recreation Department.

This intern position will work an average of eight (8) hours per week, March through October.  Some weeks might be higher, some weeks lower.  Must be available to work some weekdays and some weekends (per work party and events schedule).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following statements reflect the general duties and responsibilities of this classification, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing.  The incumbent is also expected to meet the technical performance standards developed for this position and the City’s standards for interpersonal and team behaviors, customer contacts, and supervision.  Incumbents may also perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or to meet current workload needs.

  • Supervises scheduled work parties at Lake Lois Habitat and other park locations, which includes:  representing the Parks & Recreation Department, directing work of volunteers, and ensuring proper safety procedures.
  • Completes forestry grant habitat grant monitoring requirements which includes: noxious weed assessment, regrowth of native plant assessments, and photo documentation.
  • Assists with special events as needed.

Qualifications

Area(s) of study:  Must be a current forestry, urban forestry, field ecology, environmental studies student or a student in a closely related program.  Eligibility for the State Work Study Program preferred but not required for this position.

  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must past a background investigation.
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Must have a valid First Aid & CPR certification within first two weeks of hire.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational program leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Must be in good standing at their college or university.  Students must retain their status until the end of their internship.  In some cases, students may be in enrolled in technical certificate programs in particular fields relevant to the City’s business objectives.
  • Students may work during the summer without being enrolled; however, they must be returning to school and pre-registered for the fall team.
  • Must be considering a profession related to some aspect of the City’s business objectives.  Generally, interns should be advanced enough in their educational programs to have begun taking courses in a field related to their work at the City.  However, in some cases, previous work experience or education may substitute for their current academic program of study.
  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration and Reform and Control Act.
