The recruitment is one (1) permanent full-time Fish Biologist 2 in the Fish Program, Region 6. The duty station for this position is Region 6 Office, 48 Devonshire Rd, Montesano, WA.98563.

Under the guidance of agency fishery managers and policy staff, this position provides data analysis in support of the management of the coastal Dungeness crab fishery. In addition, this position has duties associated with crab gear and whale entanglement conflicts, the transition to electronic monitoring of the fishery, and electronic fish tickets.

This position also regularly communicates with commercial fishers, fish buying companies, conservation groups, and other state agencies regarding these and other issues, including the development of industry workshops and working with providers of electronic monitoring equipment.

Duties

Analyze Fishery data 
Tasks include:
Using established statistical and research procedures analyze coastal crab biological and fishery data to provide fishery managers and policy staff with regular updates on fishery status, harvest projections and other needs as assigned. Write and submit annual technical reports on crab biological and fishery information.

Evaluate commercial crab gear conflicts with marine mammals
Tasks include:
Under the direction of agency staff, work closely with NOAA Fisheries staff, coastal crab industry members and others to understand whale migration patterns and coastal commercial Dungeness crab fishery dynamics looking for possible methods to minimize conflicts with coastal commercial crab gear. This can include organizing workshops to bring parties together, coordinating gear testing, acting as a WDFW representative to whale entanglement work groups, and as a liaison between commercial fishers and the agency.

Coordinate crab fishery electronic monitoring programs and electronic fish ticket implementation
Tasks include:
Work with providers of electronic fisheries monitoring equipment, agency fishery managers, tribal co-managers, and fishery participants to determine what systems will best fit the coastal crab fishery. Hold workshops to guide in the selection, development, installation and operation of the system chosen. Act as the ongoing agency point person in the operation of the system

Supervise one Scientific Technician and provide shellfish data quality oversight
Tasks include:
Effectively supervise one permanent one scientific technician. On a regular basis, provide clear guidance on assigned work expectations. Annually conduct performance evaluations. Provide data quality assurance and quality control for shellfish fisheries, as appropriate.

Working Conditions
40 hour week Monday-Friday unless otherwise scheduled.  Office with occasional field work dockside or ocean going commercial fishing vessels.  Ability to work on vessels in extremely rough open-ocean conditions and not be affected by motion sickness.  Ability to drive automobiles and 4×4 pickups on freeways and rural roads under all weather conditions, and during daylight and nighttime hours.  Ability to spend long periods of time using a computer keyboard while entering data.

Union
This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science AND one year of professional experience in fish/ wildlife/ habitat management or research.

Note: A Master’s degree or Ph.D, degree in the applicable science will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
Data analysis skills including a working knowledge of R, Access database and high level Excel spreadsheet software include design, maintenance, and GIS.
Training and experience in statistical analysis.
Strong communication abilities both written and oral formats, including making public presentations and guiding large groups.
