Natural Resource Technician 2
(Non-permanent; Full-time)

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill two (2) full time, nonpermanent Natural Resource Technician 2 positions located in the Wildlife Program, Region 2, Douglas County Wildlife Area Complex.  The duty station is 54 Moe Road, Brewster, located in Douglas County. The employment period is anticipated to start April 1, 2019 and end November 28, 2019.

These positions will assist with the implementation and maintenance of wildlife enhancement projects and wildlife oriented recreational use projects on the Douglas County Wildlife Area Complex which includes the Sagebrush Flat, Big Bend and Wells Wildlife Areas.

Duties

Vegetation Management:

  • Weed control activities.  This includes chemical, cultural, and mechanical means using a variety of vehicles and equipment.  This includes backpack sprayers, ATV, UTV, truck, and tractor mounted sprayers.

Habitat Maintenance:

  • Assist with habitat maintenance and restoration projects including soil preparation, mowing, planting shrubs/trees, seeding, maintaining irrigation systems, using tractor, ATV, UTV, and implements.

Equipment and Vehicle Operation:

  • Safely and competently, operate and maintain tractors, trailers, ATVs, UTVs, trucks, farm implements, gas-powered and hand tools. Safely operate trucks, trailers, and equipment in off-road situations. Assist with sign maintenance and wildlife area facilities and grounds maintenance. Assist with minor repair and maintenance of all equipment and vehicles.

Fence Maintenance and Construction:

  • Maintain and repair stock and deer fence. Repair holes, replace staples, brace old posts, install new posts, and build rock jacks. Safely use a variety of hand tools including hammer, shovel, wire cutters, tamping bars, hand saws, and chainsaws to accomplish these tasks.

Qualifications

Qualifications
Graduation from high school graduation or GED, including 3 years of experience as a Technician 1 or equivalent natural resource related labor experience.

Current Washington State Pesticide Applicator license or the ability to obtain one is required.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with four-wheel drive vehicles, farm equipment, ATVs and UTVs.
  • Experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
  • Experience maintaining vehicles and equipment such as pumps, small engines, and tractors, etc.
  • Pesticide Applicator’s license (opportunity to obtain this license will be provided).
  • Working knowledge of vegetation management techniques and strategies
  • Critical thinking and the ability to make decisions based on the best available information.
  • Working knowledge and experience with a wide variety of hand and power tools (chainsaws, weedeaters, water pumps, drills, hammers, socket sets, wrenches, etc.)
  • A valid Washington or other State Driver’s License

Experience is based on full time equivalency (i.e., 40 or more hours/week).  Part time work is prorated (e.g., 20 hours/week for 6 years = 3 years of experience). Do not count experience that was a part of your educational requirements.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions
The employee is expected to spend the majority of their time working in the field under sometimes difficult conditions.  Weather conditions can vary from freezing to over 100 degrees F, and terrain is steep and rocky.  Other hazards include venemous reptiles, biting insects, and poisonous plants.  Employees must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds over steep, rugged terrain in hot or cold weather to conduct maintenance, weed control and habitat enhancement work.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.
