POSITION SUMMARY:
The Trails Technician will assist with the Catalina Island Conservancy’s trail program goals by performing trail maintenance and repairs throughout the island.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Vegetation pruning
  • Weed whacking
  • Constructing/repairing erosion control structures
  • Tread maintenance
  • Sign refinishing/repair
  • Sign making and installation
  • Stone stair/check dam construction and repair
  • Shade structure construction and repair
  • Survey trail maintenance needs.
  • Survey for potential trail realignments
  • Graffiti and vandalism control
  • Trash and litter removal
  • Train and supervise alternative spring break college groups for trail work
  • Remedy “Social trails”
  • Maintain data records for accomplishments and volunteer hours
  • Job site housekeeping
  • Successfully complete all training required for the position to include e.g. safety, equipment, skills, etc., as assigned.
  • Other duties that occasionally will be required (e.g. work with bison, brush clearance, and fire abatement).

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Basic knowledge about materials, equipment and tools used in building maintenance and repair

  • Valid California Driver’s License

  • Accepts supervisory guidance and counsel. Follows through with specific responsibilities, as directed.
  • Recognizes and supports the efforts of coworkers.
  • Requires organizational skills for daily assigned task; Prepares safety equipment and materials/tools needed for that day’s work.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

Associate’s degree or two years of trail maintenance experience and/or relevant experience. Skills and experience conducting trails field work. The ability and desire to quickly acquire new skills necessary to be a successful field technician. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

DEMANDS:

  • Employee must live and work on Catalina Island
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Position involves functioning in the field; fieldwork requires a high level of fitness. Fieldwork involves extensive manual labor; hiking over rugged terrain; and the use of equipment and tools. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work location is at Middle Ranch, Avalon, CA.  Field conditions are strongly weather‑dependent and may be windy, hot, dusty, cold, muddy and/or wet depending on season and the degree of exposure. Work may be conducted independently or with groups of staff and volunteers. Typical hiking conditions include very steep, rugged terrain on unstable rocky substrate with poison oak and cactus. Wildlife may be encountered in the field and pose some threat.
