Job Summary
Who We Are
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Manage marine geophysical data.
- Ingest multibeam swath sonar bathymetry and associated data collected by NOAA, the academic fleet (UNOLS), and partner agencies.
- Ingest subbottom profile and other marine geophysical data.
- Archive data and populate online databases and systems to enable public discovery of and access to original and processed data and derived products..
- Assess ingest and access systems, and identify ways to improve/enhance those systems.
- Document data in ISO standard metadata format.
- Monitor and report scientific and technological changes impacting the geophysical data repository and services.
- Serve as point of contact for researchers and the public regarding marine geophysical data.
- Work with data providers to ensure their archive and access needs are met, including staying abreast of best practices and technological advances that need to be accommodated, and providing regular updates on archive statistics.

What We Require
- Bachelor’s Degree in the Earth Sciences, Oceanography, or related field with 2+ years applicable experience managing data.
- Familiarity with metadata and data exchange standards, e.g. ISO, NetCDF, XML, Json.
- Experience using scripting languages to automate data tasks, such as Python, JavaScript, Bash, Groovy or similar.
- Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.
- Experience with relational databases and SQL.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong networking skills to build relationships with national and international data providers.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with good quality.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written English.
What We Would Like You To Have
- Experience working with bathymetric data, associated metadata, and ancillary data – including data acquisition, processing, analysis, and visualization.
- Familiarity with common geophysical instrumentation, data formats, and acquisition and processing software.
- Sea-going experience with marine geophysical data collection and processing, especially multibeam sonar data collection.
- A strong desire to learn and apply new skills and technologies in a rapidly evolving environment.
- Familiarity with the MB-System software application.
- Experience with GIS tools for data manipulation, visualization and evaluation, especially ESRI ArcGIS.
- Demonstrated competence, individually and as a member of a team, in the pursuit and support of scientific research.
