POSITION: Youth Conservation Corp Crew Leader

WORK SCHEDULE: Seasonal part-time, 25-40 hours per week

LOCATION: San Juan Island, Lopez Island, Orcas Island

OVERALL JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, to lead and direct summer seasonal work crews (grades 7 – 12) and to perform a variety of skilled tasks; primarily to execute field work (75-95%); to execute assigned responsibilities and implement seasonal work plans for trail construction, wildlife habitat and restoration, invasive species removal and related environmental stewardship projects; support the development and growth of the YCC program and provide training, mentoring, leadership and supervision to island YCC crews.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Leads seasonal youth activities for the YCC program.

  • Plans, develops and implements daily work plans and projects including environmental education in coordination with the Crew Coordinator and YCC management.
  • Leads and motivates crew members to perform work in both front country and back country settings.
  • Ensures effective communication with crews to safely perform projects for; trail maintenance, wildlife habitat monitoring/restoration, stewardship projects, GPS data acquisition and related projects.
  • Implements, leads, teaches, facilitates or coordinates environmental education efforts including guest speakers in conjunction with Crew Coordinator or other agency managers.
  • Remains alert to conditions and events occurring on the land system, anticipates needed actions and report such needs to the Coordinator.
  • Conducts daily safety briefings, completes daily reports, incident logs and manages any emergency response situations according to YCC protocols and first aid training.
  • Ensures training for youth crews including organization, maintenance and safe operation of equipment and tools.
  • Safely transports crew to/from project sites and any other YCC related programs or events.
    Works in a collaborative manner to help implement the YCC program, which includes the following:
  • Co-leads and maintains effective and efficient communication with crew leads, Coordinator, Program Manager and agency partners. Follows direction and detailed instructions from supervisors. Seeks clarification from supervisors when needed.
  • Communicates professionally and equally with staff and project partners. Seeks management or coordinator support and guidance when needed.
  • Assist Crew Coordinator with work project logistics, if requested.
  • Responsible for safely packing/transporting gear, tools and food.
  • Effectively communicate with crew members, parents, program partners via phone, email and in-person.
  • Assist with managing crew schedule, project details when requested and adhere to program policies.
  • Prepare and submit daily reports, incident logs, and season reports in a timely manner.
  • Reports all incidents regarding the health and safety of crews and partners to Coordinator and management in a timely manner.
  • Provide documentation of projects and experiences with photo and/or video, upload to cloud storage on at least a weekly basis.
  • Prepare for and lead overnight trips.
  • Ensure safe transportation using crew van vehicle to/from project sites, and follows all state vehicular laws and regulations.

2. Other:

  • Maintains a high level of professionalism and integrity, provides a high level of customer service, inspires confidence and respect, find solutions to challenges and uses feedback from others to grow and develop.
  • Performs duties as required to meet the needs of the YCC Program.
  • Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials and equipment. Uses all safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Works as part of a team to coordinate staff response to issues related to program disciplines.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience as a crew member or leader in a conservation, trails or other similar program.
  • Previous experience with technical aspects of trail building, restoration or natural resource related projects.
  • Wilderness First Aid, EMT, or other advanced first aid certification.
  • Familiarity of the San Juan Islands, marine ecosystems and ecology of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Experience leading youth groups in outdoor environments.
  • Experience a naturalist, outdoor or environmental education teacher/leader.
  • Is patient, enjoys being part of a team, working with youth and acting as a mentor.

Must possess a willingness to perform physical activity, work in adverse weather and field conditions. Must have the ability to use all safety equipment. Demonstrated ability to rely on experience, training and independent judgement in determining how to plan and execute responsibilities in a resourceful and effective manner.
