The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Development Division has an exciting internship opportunity for a currently enrolled college student. This intern position, located in Olympia, WA, will support WSDOT managers statewide with projects that involve collecting and analyzing data, conducting field surveys, literature searches, assessing data to determine outcome or results and report findings and conclusions in writing, on web based applications and making presentations to interested audiences.

This position will perform the following work:

  • At the direction of a manager and under close supervision, develops studies, work plans, collects data, analyzes data and reports results to identified audiences using effective communication.
  • Learns about planning, operations, construction and administration programs and projects by participating in tasks that help shape an individual inquiry or project.
  • After instruction, works competently with GIS, safety, roadway, passenger data collections and systems using specialized computer programs.
  • Prepares reports, technical memorandum, briefings and presentations on research findings and results.
  • Participates in meetings, conferences, and other events that pertain to an assigned topic.
  • The incumbent will receive instructions about the work to be done and their work is reviewed at various stages of any given assignment and upon completion.
  • Any identified anomalies in the work will be referred to higher level staff for resolution.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Currently enrolled in a college institution is required.
  • Possess strong technical skills with the capability to learn and use a variety of software such as MS Office, SR View, GIS software tools to collect data and produce reports and graphics.
  • Fully understand basic statistical analysis, research methods and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret images to report data.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive to field sites and meetings as necessary.
