Stewardship Program Coordinator

The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) is seeking a dynamic and driven person to join our small team of salmon conservation-minded staff to ensure effective coordination of our stewardship initiatives and community programming. NSEA is a mission driven organization in which NSEA’s board, staff, and volunteers work together to ensure our community is empowered and inspired to steward and care for our surrounding watershed. A successful candidate will be experienced in leadership, driven to learn and expand stewardship initiatives, self motivated and independently efficient, adaptive in a fast-paced environment, willing to collaborate, and passionate about salmon recovery. The person we are looking for will work at a variety of levels to ensure stewardship programs are carried out effectively, including, but not limited to, Stream Steward Program community work parties, Salmon Sighting Events, NSEA Habitat and Restoration Tours, the Feature Leaders of Whatcom Waters Internship program, and the Nooksack River Stewards Program.

Compensation:

This is a full-time, regular position, not to exceed 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings. Compensation includes a rate of pay of $14/hour and a competitive entry level  compensation package: holiday, sick and vacation paid time off, medical/dental insurance, long- and short-term disability insurance, and employer matched retirement plan.

Support Program Director Estimated 40% of time

  • Manage volunteer database, including reporting
  • Provide content, editing and oversight for Fish Tales articles
  • Assist in grant writing, editing and reporting in support of NSEA stewardship and outreach programs
  • Support all events and outreach opportunities as needed
  • Support and participate in Board of Directors meetings

Supervise Stewardship Team Estimated 40% of time

  • Directly supervise two AmeriCorps members involved with NSEA stewardship and outreach programs:
    • Salmon Sighting Events; outreach efforts
    • Habitat and Restoration Tours; outreach efforts
    • Stream Stewards Program; community-based restoration work parties
    • FLOW Internship Program; professional development training series
  • Work with additional program staff to meet all Washington Service Corps expectations
  • Work with additional program staff to cross train and support NSEA education programs

Coordinate Nooksack River Stewards Program Estimated 20% of time

  • Coordinate with other program staff to co-manage the Nooksack River Stewards Program
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteer interns
  • Provide daily supervision and support during program period (June-September)
  • Enter, track and report all aspects of the program
  • Assist in grant writing/reports

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in environmental field, or similar work experience
  • Passion for NSEA’s mission in local salmon recovery
  • Prior experience in community outreach and education
  • Leadership experience
  • Willingness to work in both an indoor and outdoor setting, in all types of weather
  • Ability to carry a minimum of 40 lbs
  • Comfortable giving public presentations
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Pacific salmon and Northwest natural history
  • Previous service as AmeriCorps member
  • Work experience at a nonprofit
  • Familiarity with grant writing and reporting
  • Strong professional writing skills
