ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

Beginning in 1984, Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) is a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for youth and young adults to learn, grow, and experience success.  To achieve this, NYC provides a variety of outdoor, conservation-service programs throughout the Northwest that emphasize leadership, growth and personal success.  NYC partners with agencies like the U.S. Forest Service; National Park Service and Bureau Land Management to provide field-based service projects. NYC’s programs serve over 1,000 youth and young adults annually, with programs operating in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California.  Idaho Conservation Corps (ICC) is a program of Northwest Youth Corps.

NYC engages youth and young adults from all walks of life and provides a multifaceted experience that helps propel them into future opportunities and careers. Hard and soft skills are taught and reinforced throughout the member’s term through formal practical trainings.  NYC strives to provide program participants the skills and competencies needed to succeed in a wide variety of professional environments and life circumstances.

LOCATION: Based out of Eugene, OR but significant travel is expected throughout OR, WA and ID

STARTING WAGE: $115/day; $117 with proof of WFR or WEMT certifications

POSITION SUMMARY

WoodsBosses (WB) are the face of leadership for field programs at Northwest Youth Corps.   WBs implement dynamic youth programs and/or play a key role in supporting young adult programming.  WBs will spend the vast majority of their time in the field, working long days and moving between remote crews on a daily basis for the duration of their position.  WBs oversee staff training in partnership with a Programs Coordinator and directly supervise field leaders during program implementation.  WBs will help: prepare staff for the successful and safe implementation of projects; provide technical assistance on the worksite; are responsible for performing quality control of service projects; maintain organizational standards of camp life to help ensure the physical, social and emotional well-being of participants; ensure educational programming remains robust; coordinate program orientations and graduations with relevant Programs Coordinator(s); often serve as the first respondent to field incident emergencies. While supporting youth programs, WBs coordinate all aspects of weekend sites (crew rendezvous) such as, but not limited to: recreational opportunities for participants; respite for staff; meaningful reflective time for youth; food and tool logistics and resupply.

While WBs will focus their support on a particular set of programs, their visitation schedule will include a variety of program types.  The WB’s schedule of work in any given week will be designed by the team NYC’s Programs Coordinators to respond to the areas of highest need while also limiting a WBs overall travel.

POSITION DETAILS

Department Supervision and collaborations:

  • Supervised by a Program Coordinator(s)
  • Collaborates with Program Coordinator and Head Field Trainer to provide robust, fun and effective staff training experiences for Field Leaders
  • Collaborates with the Program Coordinator to schedule, communicate and provide support to youth crews as necessary
  • Supervises, supports, evaluates and provides professional development to 8-12 Field Leaders
  • Collaborates with Field leaders to overcome challenges as first line of communication
  • Assists in supervision, inspiring and providing feedback to youth participants
  • Collaborates with NYC’s operations team to resupply crews with food and tools
  • Collaborates with Program Coordinator to provide effective incident and emergency response
  • Implements enriching weekend site experiences for youth including coordination of recreational trips, Saturday Circles and Parents Weekends

Position Qualifications & Certifications

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record as significant travel will be required.
  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification required, Wilderness First Responder (WFR or WEMT) strongly preferred.
  • At least two years of experience and demonstrated skill at teaching leadership, project management, risk management, expeditionary logistics, team dynamics, conflict resolution and conservation mitigation techniques
  • A minimum “B Sawyer – Felling and Bucking” on the USDA National Certification program or the ability to gain the certification by the beginning of programs
  • A minimum of a year of staff supervisory experience required, preferably within NYC
  • A minimum of a year of experience working in youth corps environments with demonstrated technical skills and ability to teach trail building, trail structures and invasives
  • Previous experience which demonstrates organizational skills, the ability to perform at a consistently high level under pressure, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and familiarity with a wide range of communications tactics will all be skills necessary to succeed in this position.

Position Deliverables:

  • Create training goals for each individual training session
  • Collaborate with other leaders in delivering effective staff training modules that effectively prepare participants to confidently meet the demands and standards of implementing NYC field programs
  • Create informal and formal, as needed, goals for each leader participant during their training sessions
  • Facilitation of enriching weekend site activities
  • Effective communications with Program Coordinators around crew’s social and tangible needs, including timely completion of Field Visit paperwork components
  • Accountable to ensure crew’s weekly paperwork is complete, comprehensive and turned in on time
  • 10 awesome pictures of crews everyday
  • Other Duties as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT This is a full time, seasonal and supervisory position and will require long days and/or evening and weekend responsibilities. A WoodsBoss will receive a formal day-off approximately every other week during their term of employment.
