Salary: $3,673 – $4,936 per mo

As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem solving skills and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.

UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” for five consecutive years.

The Burke Museum’s collections and exhibits connect the past, present, and future through topics such as the natural world, the people and cultures of Washington State and cutting-edge science. They give us a way to trace history, provide a spark for stories and ideas, and connect people to each other and to their environment. Until now, they were hidden behind walls; inaccessible to the very people they are intended to serve.

Opening in 2019, the New Burke’s visitor experience centers on removing the barriers that have traditionally separated the public side of the museum (the exhibits) from its working side (the collections storerooms, labs, and other workspaces). Removing these barriers enables us to be less about “show and tell”—although storytelling is still part of who we are—and more about “experience and do.”

Along with 6 brand new galleries to experience, every visit to the New Burke is different because every day brings new work. In addition, because we are doing this work right out in the open, everyone can experience it and join in. This experience is further enhanced by a dedicated corps of Gallery SPARKs volunteers who facilitate connections between visitors and the work of the museum and a myriad of public offerings created by the Adult Programs Manager, the Youth & Family Programs Manager, and the Interpretive Programs Manager.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Burke is seeking a creative, strategically-minded person to reimagine the Burke’s adult program offerings in this new iteration of the Burke Museum. As a member of the Visitor Experience Team, the Adult Programs Manager will create and implement an annual suite of programs such as events, lectures, classes, and performances that engage visitors with the Burke’s mission of sharing natural and cultural collections so all people can learn, be inspired, generate knowledge, feel joy, and heal.  These programs are primarily geared toward adult audiences and complement two other sets of programs: those developed for younger age groups and managed by the Burke’s Education team and daily onsite experiences managed by the Interpretive Programs Manager.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Visitor Experience and is responsible for program development, annual budgeting and planning, successful event execution and logistical coordination across departments,  ensuring progress toward target KPIs, conducting ongoing evaluation, and proactively proposing ideas to maximize program profitability and support the Burke’s mission through programming.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Program Development:

  • Develop a profitable and diverse suite of annual offerings as supported by the museum’s collections and resources that support the Burke’s audience development and other strategic goals, including engaging young adult (millennial) audiences and natural history and culture enthusiasts
  • Work interdepartmentally to develop a new set of programs that explore the concept of healing
  • Create and maintain ongoing strategic partnerships with mission-similar organizations, community groups, sponsors and partners
  • Create and maintain systems for ongoing evaluation and continued program improvement

    Budgeting & Planning:

  • Create annual budget and work plan, including detailed event budgets
  • Design and use dashboards and reports to monitor progress toward departmental KPIs and proactively find creative solutions if benchmarks are not being met
  • Share adult programs progress in meetings and other communications as appropriate

    Program Implementation:

  • Serve as Program Lead and point of contact for all event partners (internal or external) throughout planning and during all adult programs, beginning with the Burke’s Grand Opening Weekend in Fall 2019
  • Create and maintain adult program planning documents (program brief, staff & volunteer schedule, long-term planning and day-of timelines, post-event debrief, night-of communications with input from event planning team)
  • Represent adult programs in all event planning meetings; proactively and effectively coordinate all cross-departmental communications and logistics in support of adult programs
  • Provide clearly outlined program needs requests to Visitor Services Manager, Event Rentals Manager, and Volunteer Manager to assist them in staffing and amenities planning, space reservations, and rental coordination
  • Work with Youth and Family Programs Manager to incorporate appropriate activities for younger audiences into adult programs when appropriate
  • Maintain event layout documents with input from Visitor Services Manager and Event Rentals Manager
  • Work with Communications team to create event copy for ticketing and website pages
  • Work with Membership Manager to implement creative member opportunities/promotions related to adult programs

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in history, museum studies, fine arts, education, anthropology, biology, science and three years of professional experience in a program specialty OR equivalent education and experience
  • Evening and weekend availability
  • People-oriented, proactive, problem solver
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, in person, over the phone and via email
  • Experience with logistics, security, and event management

    DESIRED:

  • A broad variety of program management experience, especially with providing mission-driven and/or educational experiences that encourage knowledge exchange as opposed to didactic instruction
  • Creative, out-of-the-box thinker with fresh ideas about what museum programming should be
  • Applicants with diverse perspectives and cultural backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
