Climate Solutions is seeking someone at the nexus of communications and outreach—someone who crafts and communicates effective messages to move more people to engage on climate solutions. We are looking for a smart, nimble, and collaborative communicator and organizer to build partnerships, conduct traditional and social media outreach, and support the Oregon program to maximize the strength of the larger movement and deepen and expand engagement.

This is a full-time position located in Portland. The Director of Communications and Engagement, who supervises the role, is based in Seattle.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement strategic and compelling communications.
  • Deepen and broaden outreach and meaningful engagement.
  • Conduct regular media outreach, including pitch calls, rapid response, opinion pieces, news conferences, and story cultivation with regional and national outlets.
  • Cultivate and nurture key partnerships, broad coalitions, and relationships with priority constituencies, particularly those impacted first and worst by climate including communities of color and lower income communities.
  • Develop regular email communications and social media for the Oregon programs, including action alerts, social media posts, and website updates.
  • Incorporate Climate Solutions’ Equity, Diversity and Inclusion commitments and Climate Solutions’ values (available here) into all aspects the job.
  • Meet staff reporting deadlines for program, development, and administrative tasks.
  • Additional duties may be assigned within the course of the work.

DEMONSTRATED COMPETENCIES:

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Conducting public outreach to educate and engage specific audiences, working in partnership.
  • Writing and editing of news releases, opinion pieces, pitch memos, email action alerts, blog and social media posts, and talking points on deadline.
  • Editing, posting, and managing website content.
  • Conducting direct outreach and pitch calls to reporters and editors, relationship cultivation, crafting timely pitches, and approaching reporters on story ideas.
  • Flexibility and desire to work in a campaign environment both with a team and independently.
  • Setting priorities and managing multiple short‐term and long‐term projects simultaneously.
  • Being collaborative and equitable in your approach to your work and in your relationships with your colleagues.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and vision of Climate Solutions.
  • Strong writing, editing, presentation, verbal, and analytic skills.
  • Ability to operate desktop computer and Microsoft Windows and Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and specialized software applications in a network environment.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of three years of experience with communications or outreach and engagement, ideally in the nonprofit or public policy sectors.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the complex understanding of racial justice and the urgency of confronting institutional racism and inequity within our systems. Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture.
  • Understands environmental issues and their potential to engage the public.
  • Strong writing, editing, presentation, verbal, and analytic skills.

REMUNERATION

This is a full‐time exempt position with the salary range starting at $65,000 annually and generous benefits including, medical, paid leave, and retirement.
