Basic PurposeThe Water Resources Assistant/Educator will assist the Water Resources Division with education and outreach activities.

Working hours are generally between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., but will also include a.m. and p.m. peak data collection.  Schedule will be flexible, although work is limited to 16 hours per week.

*These positions are budgeted through 12/31/19.  In the event that funds are approved in successor budgets, these positions may be extended for a period not to exceed 24 months in total duration from the start date.

**Please note that this recruitment is intended to fill two Water Resources Assistant positions.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSpecific duties and responsibilities may include:

• Developing educational activities for school groups, teachers, and public events.
• Facilitating community service projects for school and community groups.
• Coordinating and leading field trips for school and community groups.
• Educating the public about local programs at outreach events.
• Assisting in the coordination of activities of several regional environmental education and outreach groups of which the City participates, which include the Thurston County Stream Team, South Sound GREEN, the Thurston County Stormwater Outreach Group, and the Thurston ECO Network.
• Attending surface and ground water quality sampling events with department staff to gain training and experience in understanding local water quality conditions.
• Distributing water conservation items.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about water resources issues and the challenges associated with managing these resources.Qualifications

• Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
• Candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED.
• At time of employment, candidate must possess a current Washington State Driver License and a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
• Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Desired Experience with:

• Public outreach, public speaking, and environmental education.
• Coordinating volunteer projects and guiding youth.
• Strong communication, scheduling/time management, and organizational skills are necessary.
• Field data collection.

Environmental Education, Public Speaking, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Water Resources, Biology, Policy, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.

• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, move wheelbarrows over uneven terrain, dig holes, plant trees, and work in and along streams.
• Willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.
