The University of Washington’s School of Public Health (SPH) is one of the nation’s premier schools of public health.  With a growing student body of more than 600 undergraduates and more than 800 graduate students, the School’s academic, research and service missions are supported by 250 voting faculty and more than 500 staff who work within five academic departments – Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Global Health (joint with the School of Medicine), Health Services – and the Office of the Dean.

The Public Health-Global Health Major is a school-wide liberal education major, leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, which uses public health questions, concepts, and tools to teach critical thinking skills. Students learn to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and explore answers to promote the health and well-being of communities, locally, nationally, and globally.

The School of Public Health has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Adviser & Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Coordinator.  This full-time position serves as an integral member of a dynamic student services team as both an adviser to students in the Public Health-Global Health Major as well as coordinator of equity, diversity, and inclusion programs.

Advising
•Advise public health-global health prospective and current majors regarding course of study, career options, academic planning, and degree requirements.
•Serve as primary point of contact for prospective and new public health-global health majors regarding admission and degree program requirements.
•Engage students in difficult conversations surrounding power, privilege, and equity as they relate both to public health-global health as their discipline and their experience as University students.
•Understand the unique experiences of underrepresented, first-generation, and other marginalized populations on campus to better support their academic success.
•Advocate for students broadly, and disenfranchised students specifically, in the School of Public Health, Dean’s Office, program, or in other spaces.
•In collaboration with program staff, evaluate applicants for admission and counsel students regarding procedures for program reinstatement.
•Participate in advising resource and materials development such as brochures, course flyers, and website content.
•Assist in building community for students in Major, School, and University by collaborating on student programming and special events.
•Share responsibility with advising staff for information sessions and class visits.
•Support program and course assessment activities.
•Engage in proactive advising model to support and challenge students to achieve their leadership, honors, research, experiential learning, and academic goals.
•Collaborate with colleagues on strategies that support undergraduate advising and program improvement.
•Cultivate relationships with advisers and counselors in other programs and units in order to better help students navigate their experience.
•Support opportunities to facilitate student academic success.
•Communicate with stakeholders across multiple domains (SPH, University, two- and four-year counterparts, community partners, etc.)
•Utilize learning technologies to develop and provide opportunities for more accessible advising.
•Strive to integrate career advising – options that support student strengths, skills, interests, and passions – into advising and connect students to career resources in the School and at the University.
•Share responsibility of enrollment management goal to develop relationships from prospective students through engaged alumni.
•Leverage student relationships to contribute to more robust alumni connections for the Major and School.
•Provide appropriate support in cases of emotional/psychological distress, and make referrals to additional resources as needed.
•Monitor student progress as it pertains to the Public Health-Global Health Major continuation policy and University satisfactory progress policy, especially in the case of at-promise and on-probation students.
•Seek out professional development opportunities to increase and improve advising capacity.
•Engage with and represent Major, advising, and undergraduate education, generally, on faculty and School committees.
•Attend meetings, public events, recruitment events, and conferences representing the Major, the School, and its academic programs.
•Perform variety of intermediate processing and computer tasks using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, EARS, EDW, SDB, and other platforms.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Programming (EDI)
•Partner with Academic Services Director to develop and lead in executing a comprehensive plan for on-campus equity, diversity, and inclusion programs.
•Build and maintain relationships with partners in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), especially for the Equal Opportunity Public Health Program (EOPHP), College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), and UW Champions.
•Liaise with campus partners, including but not limited to: Disability Resources for Students, International Student Services, Office of Student Veteran Life, and Q Center; as well as the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity including: Early Identification Program (EIP), Health Sciences Center Minority Students Program, Intellectual House, McNair Scholars Program, Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center, and TRiO Student Support Services.
•Proactively coordinate meetings, events, and communication flow with campus partners.
•Distribute program updates and events to campus partners.
•Partner with Academic Services Director to assess and prioritize program efforts.
•Lead specialized advising that may result from programming.
•Coordinate faculty, staff, student, and alumni training and participation in programming.
•Communicate program efforts with other program staff and guide their participation.
•Build community with student populations through events and communication flow.
•Serve as the lead adviser for the Public Health Dawgs (PHDs) and assist with advising with Students of Color for Public Health (SCPH).
•Serve as a liaison between the Major and the SPH Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and represent the Major on the SPH Diversity Committee, including contributing to the creation and execution of the SPH strategic plan for EDI.
•Seek out and attend professional development opportunities to support EDI programming, which can include the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE), NACADA, APHA, or ASPPH.

Requirements
•Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years of experience working with college students.

•Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with faculty, staff, students, prospective students, and the public.
•Experience with and enthusiasm for working with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
•Familiarity with university or college students from marginalized populations.
•Willingness to learn quickly about SPH undergraduate and graduate degree programs and curriculum.
•Strong problem solving and organizational skills.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
